Tell me about a book that disturbed, distressed, shocked, traumatized, or unsettled you in any way. Please elaborate on why it does.
StringTheory ( @StringTheory@beehaw.org ) 2•2 years agoThe Handmaid’s Tale. I started reading it recently, but it’s too much like current events. I had to stop reading. (Haven’t seen the show, either.)
grizuhly ( @grizuhly@lemmy.ml ) 2•2 years agoI would have to say American Psycho was pretty fucked up and I don’t think I see it mentioned yet. Way more intense than the movie because it’s a much deeper character study. But man that Patrick Bateman has some fucking crazy thoughts
eatmoregreenfood ( @eatmoregreenfood@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoTokyo Doesn’t Love Us Anymore was pretty dark at times. Vurt has furry incest so… yeah.
Silver_neurotic ( @Silver_neurotic@beehaw.org ) 1•2 years agoNo Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy I found it so unsettling I had to stop reading it.
ProfessorYakkington ( @ProfessorYakkington@lemmy.ml ) 1•2 years agoI read the blind owl recently. Not 100% sure I understood it but it left me feeling very uncomfortable Also, lapvona but some else already mentioned that.
Landrin201 ( @Landrin201@lemmy.ml ) 1•2 years agoDeaths End by Cixin Liu
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fantastic. I love this book. But its also deeply depressing. It’s a kind of existential horror that just builds and builds through the whole series and culminates in this book.
