Beachgoers on Clearwater Beach in Florida tried to escape from a waterspout that came ashore. Some people suffered minor injuries from flying debris.

You know I was thinking that at first, but then I saw the thing harmlessly blow over the people wading in the water while the people who got a head start got pelted with various tents, and chairs, and coolers, and other beach things.

Yeah! It looked pretty harmless. I thought the different reactions were pretty interesting.
It was enough to blow all the beach stuff around… maybe it’s unpleasant enough to want to not be caught in a second time. Worth running from.
You know what’s really scary are those videos from the tsunami that killed all those people. Hindsight makes me watch the water rush out and want to yell at those people, “run! Run you fucks , RUN!” but I’d probably have just stood there, watching and thinking “WTF?” like all those people.

People do get impaled to death by beach umbrellas now and then. Seems like staying in the water (if closer to sure) might indeed be the best option here.
