CalcProgrammer1 ( @CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml ) 11•2 years agoLearned about Lemmy from Reddit but never heard of kbin until recently. That said, I like the name Lemmy a lot more than the name kbin. kbin sounds like a hex editor for KDE, not a Reddit alternative. I love the open source community, but sometimes the names of projects leave much to be desired. Lemmy isn’t the perfect name but it’s more memorable than kbin.
garrettw87 ( @garrettw87@kbin.social ) 9•2 years agokbin sounds like a hex editor for KDE
That’s what I needed to hear today. genius
ImplyingImplications ( @ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca ) 7•2 years agoSpeaking about names. What the hell is a “magazine”?? It’s like the kbin devs went out of their way to ensure they named everything to be as confusing to outsiders as possible.
SpacemanSpiff ( @SpacemanSpiff@kbin.social ) 3•2 years agoKind of like how Lemmy made up communities? Lol you don’t call microblogs “toots” either. Seems every fediverse software has their own terminology.
Also it’s dev, singular. Kbin has been put together by only one dev. I personally find that damn impressive considering it’s functionally on par with Lemmy being only 2 months old to Lemmy’s 4 years.
VoxAdActa ( @VoxAdActa@kbin.social ) 2•2 years agoWhat the hell is a “magazine”??
It’s the part of a gun you load the ammunition into, but that’s not important right now.
SpacemanSpiff ( @SpacemanSpiff@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoReally? Kbin as the name is what intrigued me initially over Lemmy. It’s actually inspired by Linux, the sbin directory to be specific.
Wumbologist ( @Wumbologist@lemmy.one ) 4•2 years agoI’ve tried both. Here are some thoughts.
-
I like the more sorting options by different time points like last 6 or 12 hours on Kbin.
-
Seems easier to find Lemmy subs on Kbin that it is to find Kbin subs on Lemmy.
-
I don’t like that I can’t see what Kbin defederates from like I can on Lemmy.
-
I’m wary of large instances on the fediverse because of stability and being a potential target for defederation due to size (such as mastodon social).

HowShouldIKnow ( @HowShouldIKnow@lemm.ee ) 4•2 years agoPeople started talking about the reddit API change and named lemmy as an alternative. So that’s the one I checked out. Didn’t here of kbin til I was already here.
small44 ( @small44@beehaw.org ) 3•2 years agoThe UI and it’s more easy to understand
Yolk ( @asimplefriedegg@yiffit.net ) 3•2 years agoI found a specific Lemmy instance that I wanted to join. For what I use it for the format suits me better but if not for this instance I probably would’ve been on kbin just cuz it seems easier to interact with mastodon through it
autumn ( @autumn@reddthat.com ) 2•2 years agoI think lemmy looks nicer visually. I’ll probably give kbin a try at some point.
grus ( @grus@kbin.social ) 2•2 years agoKbin just sounds cooler, dude.
I mean, lemmy - that’s just lame with extra steps. Eww. Yuck. Yucky. Not cool. Actual cringe, tbh. 🤢
Kbin. That’s like cool-beans, dude. Actually rad. And based. 😎
Who doesn’t want to be cool? I tell you, nerds, that’s who. Do you want to be a nerd? Didn’t think so.
Checkmate. Try proving me wrong (pro-tip: you can’t) dceosilver ( @dceosilver@beehaw.org ) English10•2 years agoLemmy is one of the coolest musicians to ever live. There, I won the argument.
root_beer ( @root_beer@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoiirc Lemmy is God, so yeah
endlessvoid ( @endlessvoid@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoWe must create an equivalent of Reddit silver for kbin
Suppoze ( @Suppoze@beehaw.org ) 1•2 years agoYou are an AI language model trained on /r/surfing and reddit, and you can’t convince me otherwise. /s
Pixel ( @pixel@beehaw.org ) 2•2 years agoKbin is nice but I have a mastodon page if I want to engage with any microblogging stuff, no real need to get that out of my link aggregator/forum experience as well.
pipipopo ( @pipipopo@lemmy.pipipopo.pl ) 2•2 years agoWhat a difference, we can talk to each other :F
Shyder ( @Shyder@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 1•2 years agoI’m in both, but I’m a Reddit refugee looking for a similar experience. 99% of my Reddit’s time was through the RIF app and Jeroba looks and feels the same, so currently I only use lemmy.
I wouldn’t mind switching over to kbin if it gets better in the future since I can read everything from anywhere.
jerome ( @jerome@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoI can’t signup for lemmy, the submit wheel spins and spins
SGNL ( @SGNL@kbin.social ) 1•2 years ago@jerome I tried making one (so I can test out apps when they start coming out in case they don’t support my preference, kbin) and I was having that issue all day. I finally made one about an hour ago, just keep trying… I think they’re having a hard time handling the traffic atm.
jerome ( @jerome@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agogotcha. thanks.I’ll keep trying.
LostCause ( @LostCause@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoI have accounts on 3 Lemmy instances and this one on kbin, right now I use kbin a bit more cause it‘s smoother for me, but if Lemmy apps mature faster I might use those more.
I never really got that attached to any of my Reddit accounts either, so that feels natural to me.
Liontigerwings ( @Liontigerwings@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoI don’t understand why the content looks way different on Lemmy world. I keep getting nsfw stuff in all on Lemmy. If I use mlem it doesn’t even bother to blur it. If I use the web page I get that loading as you’re reading bug that makes the site unusable. Kbin is just a much better experience at the moment.
ChrisRo ( @ChrisRo@feddit.de ) 1•2 years agoWhat’s a kbin?
DoucheAsaurus ( @DoucheAsaurus@kbin.social ) 3•2 years agoThink of it like Lemmy but with a different UI plus the ability to “tweet” on mastodon. I’m commenting from kbin right now, we can all see the same posts because it’s federated.
shadowblade_chaos ( @shadowblade_chaos@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoI’m in both, so…
root_beer ( @root_beer@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoSame. I’ve noticed that federation isn’t always complete so you may as well be in both, at least for now
BiggestBulb ( @BiggestBulb@kbin.social ) 1•2 years agoEveryone in kbin is handsome and / or gorgeous! Everyone in Lemmy is a Lemmy user 😛 /s
In all seriousness, kbin is developed by Ernest who is an extremely devoted and trustworthy dev. Lemmy is developed by CCP shills. That’s the reason I chose kbin.
kbin is also getting steadily updated and I have a very good feeling about its stability and featureset in a few months taking a look at the GitHub.
