Hopefully this means backwards compatibility on digitally purchased titles. Would be silly if they still didn’t have this figured out.
you say that, but it’s nintendo, so…

I’m expecting this as I think the console is dead on arrival if they don’t offer it. The account migration is a good sign too

It’s not about figuring it out. It’s about people rebuying stuff. As long as they do, Nintendo has no reason to change anything.

Heh, maybe they’ll do a “console as a service” thing. Everything is more and more just digital goods and nobody eg. owns games anymore it’s all just “you have a license to play this game”, so why bother selling hardware at all?

If that’s the case it’ll be the first nintendo platform I don’t buy since the original NES. I still buy physical cartridges and if that’s no longer an option I guess I’m just a retro gamer playing emulated systems.

Same. There is something about holding onto a physical copy that digital will never replace. You could also let friends borrow them and resell them.

On that note, why doesn’t Nintendo just make their own emulators? Like, that should make them a mint, having people buy games that aren’t actually able to be otherwise acquired legally anymore.

According to Nintendo, this is already the case with games you play.
- interolivary ( @interolivary@beehaw.org ) English4•1 year ago
Yep, them and almost everyone else except GOG (I think?)
- circuitfarmer ( @circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org ) English2•1 year ago
I 100% think this is the thing, and I 100% hope it backfires.

Yeah I was “joking but not joking” with that comment. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if game streaming was the direction they’d want to take
