Hello community! I’m curious about what y’all favorite long tracks are? By long I mean 10+ minutes (that is at least long to me with short attention span normally). For me it’s The Past Is A Grotesque Animal by Of Montreal (linked)
Edit: Thanks for the responses!!! looks like I have a lot to listen to these next few days

Many songs by Car Seat Headrest, they’ve all got great story telling and/or strong emotional arcs. Beach Life In Death is the first thing coming to my mind right now

Sinnerman by Nina Simone is a great longer song! One of my favourites to listen to on my walk to work in the mornings.

Perhaps you didn’t think of classical music per se, but this is one of my favorite pieces of music, from Mahler’s “Tragic” symphony, written during a rather good period of his life if memory serves. He also didn’t call it “tragic himself” I believe. Just a beautiful movement that stands on its own.
You’re right, I didn’t consider classical music. But I do have a ton of respect for it even though I don’t listen to it much anymore. I love the way it can tell a story without a single word.

In no particular order:
- Maggot Brain by Funkadelic (courtesy of Eddie Hazel’s guitar),
- Come Down to Us by Burial.
- Hallucinations Troubadour by Tim Buckley (a mash-up),
- Dogs by Pink Floyd (basically all of Animals just flows on great),
- Station to Station by David Bowie
- A lot of tracks from Kate Bush’s 50 Words for Snow.
I also really like a good EP that all flows together and feels like one track.

“I” by Meshuggah. About 21 minutes long. Also, “Blackwater Park” by Opeth, just over 12 minutes, though I feel like mentioning Opeth is cheating.

It’s not quite 10 minutes, but I’d say Dancers to a Discordant System is my favorite Meshuggah song regardless.
- Thormjolnir ( @Thormjolnir@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) English3•1 year ago
Octavarium by dream theater, the full version is 24 minutes music for your ears
- Baggins ( @baggins@beehaw.org ) English1•1 year ago
Magnificent!
I’d like to say most things by Yes, but that’s an easy option.
Ocean Pride from Marillion’s Marbles album springs to mind though.
ELP, Pictures At An Exhibition. Or Pirates.
Genesis, Supper’s Ready or Firth Of Forth.
And surprisingly (after picking up on it on Radio Paradise) Snow Patrol, The Lightning Strike.

Inamorata by Metallica is a recent favorite. It’s their longest recorded song and just came out in April. It’s pretty sick.
Can’t go wrong with 2112 by Rush either. So good.

Not quite 10 minutes but kind of close. https://youtu.be/0JbGyw9dlhc
Wow that was a great track!

A 20 minute punkrock masterpiece played live with an orchestra

I used to be really into prog rock, so my definition of a long song is kinda skewed.
Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull is my go-to long song, but for something a bit more attention-span friendly you can try Close to the Edge - Yes

Excellent pick with the Of Montreal track.
One song that immediately came to mind for me is 2112 by Rush which runs about 20 minutes.
Also when I think of long songs I often think of post-rock music and Godspeed You! Black Emperor is one of my favorite post-rock groups. Their album Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress is technically 4 tracks running about 40 minutes but before those tracks existed on an album they existed as 1 song that they would play live called Behemoth. So I often consider that album to be 1 song.
