I know it has been posted over and over again on what type of data Facebook is collecting for Threads, but so far the discussion has been incredibly reddit-like.

That is, very superficial and based on the title and images alone. It is clear Facebook wants to collect these data, but on iOS, you need to give explicit permissions for some of them, e.g., location and health.

Most apps will work fine if you reject the permissions. I use Instagram to only follow a few friends and have never even given camera or microphone access.

Given that we are not on reddit, can anyone give actually useful information on what data is absolutely required to use the Threads app and what you can reject out of the “Data linked to you” list?

    • I could be mistaken but I think threads might use your Instagram account. Which can be connected to Facebook but not necessarily. So I think they’re marketing it as such.

It doesnt matter what meta gets “linked” according to the app stores, they use ads to triangulate locations (it has been done before), and they want users. Remember the pattern “embrace/federate, enhance/contribute until you have power users, then extinguish/defederate”. It worked for Google talk removing jabber as a federated competitor.

Meta values each user at ~10$ per month last I checked, and that is without you paying a subscription.

…they use ads to triangulate locations (it has been done before), and they want users.

Can you elaborate on what you mean?

They don’t need to do any tricks for location, they can get a more reliable zip code estimate from your IP address.

You need the location to serve targeted ads, how can you use ads to triangulate location? That doesn’t make much sense.
