For me-- Lemmy is getting dangerously close to pulling me away from Reddit, and I love it, but still, there’s a ways to go in terms of ‘critical features,’ yeah?

So then, here’s two of mine below. What are yours?

  • I’d still very much like to HIDE threads I’m not interested in. Otherwise, no matter what stream I choose (Subscribed | Local | All), I keep seeing the same topics, and it can be downright difficult paging through streams to see new stuff from more communities. That’s not good, frankly.

  • I very much want the ability to create *more* custom streams. On Reddit, those streams are called “MultiReddits,” and let me tell you, they rock! For instance, my one “Series” multi-reddit consists of these:

So that’s just /one/ of my 12+ stream groups (“MultiReddits”), and I love how one can parse them so specifically by community, you know?

I’d absolutely adore it such functionality could extend to Lemmy / the FV, one day.

    Not reddit exactly, but RES has the ability to track the amount of karma you’ve given specific users. It also let you tag users with custom info.

    These two features helped me recognize when I’m interacting with people repeatedly, which really helped it feel like a community. Especially useful the bigger the subreddit was.

      Thise are good points and I see the appeal, but I like that lemmy doesn’t track the total karma a user has generated. It discourages karma farming, people love sering the number go up! I know this isn’t that but it still makes me nervous cos it’s adjacent to that.

        That’s not quite what @Stillhart@lemm.ee is saying, though. They’re talking about, independently of one’s instance or the FV tracking a user’s karma for all to see, instead, a specific add-on tool (RES) allows individual users to track karmic interactions with other users.

        Personally, I find it quite useful. RES also offered the ability to tag other users with notes, another helpful thing.

    You can hide posts - I believe. There’s a setting in your Lemmy profile to hide read posts. It’s a server side setting so it’ll propagate to any apps. I believe some apps also have their own local “hide post” feature.

    Note that the Lemmy profile setting is pretty generous when it comes considering what’s read and what isn’t, but in general it works.

    I suggest browsing New, the experience is 100% better.

    I believe multi communities have been suggested before. Not sure if there’s an issue for it on GitHub yet.

      There is at least one issue for that already.

      I would like to see the ability to hide posts without having to “read” them first. I usually know right in the list if I have any interest in the topic and will open it if I do, but I’d like to be able to hide it if I don’t. Otherwise what happens is my list gets stale with posts that I’m not interested in unless I go through and “read” each one. If this feature already exists, I haven’t found it.

          Really? Is that a setting I need to turn on? I come from Sync for Reddit where that’s exactly how I hid posts there. That was the first thing I tried on wefwef, and It opened up a reply dialog, the other seems to be a vote.

          Nevermind. Turns out there are 2 actions on both left and right swipe. If you swipe left partially that’s a reply, fully and that’s hide. Swipe right partially for upvote, and fully for downvote.

      Not totally sure I understand. I don’t use apps, but browser, and don’t see any such setting in my profile toggles.

          Actually it turned out to be a disaster. Unfortunately, the option in question has no discretion, and will hide posts from the overview of any instance at all. For example, I recently became unable to view posts in my own instance, and struggled for days trying to figure out what the issue was. Finally I thought back to this convo, reversed the setting, and now the problem is solved.

          Therefore, when the Lemmy code is able to tag individual posts & comments as hidden, I reckon they ought to kill that option in user settings, as it can cause way more trouble than its worth IME.

            By this do you mean that a post is considered Read and therefore Hidden whenever any one person has read the post?

              Well, not any one /random/ person, but you, the user! I.e., right now, it all depends on what posts YOU clicked on yourself. (if you clicked on them even once, now they’re forever disappeared under that particular setting, see)

              Now, this might be helpful when browsing a feed or stream, but when it comes to looking at single instances, can be very *unhelpful*.

              For example (as said above)-- I have a tiny community (mostly of my own work), and because of that setting, can’t even see what the posts are, now.

              That is-- unless I turn the setting OFF, I can see *zero* content in my very own community, i.e. the one that I started. And of course, it messes up other instances which are merely in my ‘favorite’ streams. When I browse to them specifically in order to see what their latest content is, anything I viewed before then is now “missing.”

              It winds up being a terrible feature unless you purely view by stream, in other words.

                Yeah, like I said the Lemmy setting is ridiculously generous with what it considers read and how it hides things. Best way to circumvent this is just to use an app that’s has the option to hide read posts in-app and doesn’t use the Lemmy settings. I think Voyager (formerly wefwef) does it, maybe Memmy? Not sure about the Android applications. Connect probably

                  I hit the FV with Chrome/FF, so I guess I’m out of luck with that. Still, hiding content is such a powerful feature that I reckon it will be implemented soon enough.

                  It certainly wouldn’t hurt if the RES devs got busy on Lemmy.

    1. You can choose a sorting algorithm. If you sort by “New” you get the new stuff but you can also sort by active, new comments, … to get variation.

    2. At least in Jerboa, there is the account setting “Show Read Posts”.

    I hope that’s helpful. I’m pretty sure it exists but I haven’t found a history function. I’d like to have a list of the last posts I’ve visited.

      Thanks; I understand. My problem with “New” is that it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s activity yet. Sometimes I really would like to stay with “Active” and just hide stuff I have no interest in.

    For me, for now, it’s the ability to tap ‘back’ and be at the same point in the page that I was at when I clicked a link.

    Instead, on kbin, it’ll often dump me at the end of the page - because I’ve got a auto load media turned on and the browser doesn’t cache the media it seems.

    Used to work around this by using the Chrome PWA, and long pressing each link, but kbin no longer lets me log in on Chrome with an invalid csrf error.

    With the API just about some, and at least one app similarly almost ready, I am not worried. The ability to post an image in a reply, and it actually works, is a massive improvement over Reddit for me.
