The lack of generalist widely known XMPP servers has nothing to do with the fact that today anyone who wants to deploy a modern up to date XMPP server can do so, and has choices. There are also modern actively maintained clients. That’s my point. There are also many general free servers to join, even if not well known.

If you base the value of something on its popularity rather than its utility, then we aren’t concerned about the same things. As long as I can use the software I want to use in the way I want to use it, then I’m a happy user. I can’t control what other people use.

I always think of Tech Debt as the work you should do but aren’t doing, usually by management choice.

Stuff like, “we really should refactor this to make it easy to work on” and “we should really clean out the obnoxious deps that we pull in but don’t really need here” and “we really should clean up this function that appears is 6 different places in 2 different versions” and so on.

Essentially anything that would make maintenance and enhancement easier but that you aren’t given the time to do and it just piles up.

Why did you delete your earlier post about plug types?

I gave up waiting and bought a new PC on a sale at a local shop back in April and I don’t have the budget for both.

End of 2025 I was super hyped to buy a Steam Machine. It was the only thing I was really excited about in tech for 2026.Watching the prices of hardware just keep going up and up while the Steam Machine just kept getting more and more delayed was too much.

I love my new gaming PC. I still love my steam deck but I’m glad I didn’t wait.
