  • I’m having a fun time reading about color science and then a murder suicide out of freaking nowhere and then it’s right back to fun color talk two sentences later as if nothing happened.

I saw a guy around reddit for a while who was convinced he could functionally cure colorblindness via stereoscopic vision (for people playing video games with VR). He reasoned that if each eye is seeing a different color in the same place then observers can train themselves to see that hybrid as a new color instead of an unstable blob of both. As time went on, though, he seemed to grow more and more obsessed with the idea of himself as a functional tetrachromat, and the accessibility feature of it all took on the character of a happy side benefit to his pursuit of personal chromatic dominance.

I kind of hoped I would see him pop up in the article, as silly as his version of “new color” was. With no information of what ultimately became of his project, I’m forced to assume he crossed paths with a natural tetrachromat and destroyed his research so that she could never use it to surpass his ultimate color vision.

Back to the article, though, I myself am an anomalous trichromat which means I have some potentially exciting news for my mother about her own eyes.

  • Koopa is Bowser. That’s his name in the original Japanese and we used to call him that internationally as well. If you had been a fan when the movie came out you’d have mostly played games and watched cartoons where his name was Koopa.

And what do you mean it wasn’t endorsed by Nintendo? Nothing that’s in the movie is there without their explicit permission. The studio literally asked permission to make it dystopian cyberpunk and got the okay. They put their faith in the movie industry to turn out a good movie. That may have been a hilarious mistake but it was Nintendo’s mistake.

My answer is Battleship. It was a bad idea to even try.

  • The answers you’re getting are backwards, causally. The trend of Japanese games using the rightward button for confirm and the downward button for cancel started on the Super Nintendo, which the PlayStation copied its controller design from.

The four shapes used on the PlayStation buttons were chosen as pictographs representing their intended uses. So O is O because O was already equivalent to a checkmark in Japan, with X being negatory across cultures. Square was intended for menus or references, shaped like a computer window or sheet of paper. And if I remember right, the upward pointing triangle represented the idea of the top of the player character, suggesting head, suggesting eyes, suggesting camera control in anticipation that 3D games would need a primary button for that. But these other two buttons being prescriptive of function instead of reflective of the function that was already there got roundly ignored. Western games, which already favored the downward button for confirm before the PlayStation, ignored all four intentions.

As for your GTA experience, many games localize their menu controls just the same as localizing their language.

Why, since the days of the Super Nintendo, has Japan favored a rightward confirm while other countries favored downward one? I haven’t the foggiest.

  • Even though its spectacle isn’t unique anymore, slow-mo on the prince’s stunts still wins me over. It frankly is very cool that he can flip over guys’ heads and run along walls and more games should revel in their own coolness even when it’s not new. I run along walls in new games and the camera doesn’t zoom out to show me how dangerous it would be if I somehow fell and they make me feel nothing.

Also, Warrior Within’s chase music rules and anybody who thinks it doesn’t belong in the game just hates fun.
