This study itself is bad, but it arguably promotes better studies to come out and nobody is doubting that AI data centers are just huge sources of heat radiation and energy consumption. The study you want takes time, effort, and will undoubtedly receive pushback . At the very least, it gave an excuse for CNN to talk about the issue.

How much do you want to bet the powermod/admin saw their comments downvoted and that was basically what fueled their ban rage moment? And how much do you want to bet that that user probably has an alt user to do the same, with several months between any actual comments but a daily tabulation of upvotes and downvotes, just to avoid the same scrutiny?
This doesn’t need to be justified, if downvotes are a problem then they should be particularly addressed in the platform (and they are, and sites like reddit have already done so for years), besides the obvious of making them as easy to see as they are to mods or admins. By all means allow communities to vote neuter non-active participants.
Lemmy has a “robust” “community” blocking system (that is easily circumvented by alts - and I’ve even seen admins encourage this over just working out issues and retaining that bit of traceability to an actual person) because users are forced to leave their “communities”, they can’t just choose to switch to a moderation team for the same community. And yes, only a very small portion of most “communities” ever care that deeply about any particular mods, which ironically they would actually do if they had a choice between competing moderating teams instead of the community dramas we’ve had as a result of this “robust” system.

Just because things can be done quickly does not mean they should be.
The only draft I would accept is a police instead of a military one. Force some civilian eyes on how cops handle themselves, wash the profession enough so that it has to survive public scrutiny or otherwise get eventually called out on it.
AI is ignoring so many IP laws while the US government continues to push and collude with its cartels, all the while making sure the technology bubble is all AI and is all US centered. The EU certainly needs to do something, but I imagine many in the EU don’t want to put their own IP at risk.
Nobody tends to mind mod / admin biases until it affects them personally, me included. Nobody wants to change it, it just keeps getting shifted to “oh, you can’t rely on that guy? then move over to this community, you can totally rely on this other guy”.
Don’t you guys realize mods and admins are better and smarter than you guys? That’s why you shouldn’t have access to see the votes like they can, that’s why it’s you who needs to leave a community instead of just being able to opt to different moderation, that’s why they can call you out for behaving a certain way and then ignore it when people who support their stance do it.
News and politics tends to attract opinionated participation and the people who want to manipulate or constrain them to their own biases get attracted to moderating those communities. My advice is to ignore the masks people put on and look at how, how many, and under what biases they are actually moderating under.
One of the things I wish modlogs had is the ability to respond to them. Sure, that might mean dealing with them being further jackasses in the modlog if they are honestly misbehaving, but isn’t that also a possibility on Ye Power Trippin’ Bastards?
The admin/mod instance wouldn’t even have to allow it to be visible, it could just be visible from their own home instance. If that’s an actual problem, the home instance can get involved or just get defederated if it gets to that. It could be toggled as an option from the home instance.
As it is, even Google Maps has better “modlogs”. Still fairly easy to simulate, as someone could just action their action in their home instance and include their reply to the actual action there.
