1·11 months agoHonestly I think ID verification on the Web isn’t a bad thing. I know a professional (highly paid) propagandist in real life which made me fear trolling and masquerading as someone else is way more prevalent than assumed, because trolling on the Web is part of what he does. I’d love to see a forum where I didn’t have to second guess whether users are bots/trolls and there are no people using tens if not hundreds of accounts to skew votes.
Obviously it shouldn’t be for-profit unethical corporations that handle this, but well-run governments.

7·11 months agoAs this is a female-only community, quoting a female coworker I coincidentally discussed this with today:
“I used to change my behaviour sometimes because I was told it could be interpreted as fancying the male I’m talking to. Now I realize that’s not a my problem but a they problem. I talk to whoever, however, and if they ask me out I just say no.”
“Voila, it’s all about communication.”
“Exactly.”
The decreased brightness is a subtle nice touch.

5·1 year agoI needed the following CSS copied 51 times with a 0.05 s increment, because CSS can’t for-loop and didn’t want JavaScript:
#butterfly span:nth-child(1) { animation-delay: 0s; }I know I could’ve just for-looped it somewhere else and copy-paste the output, but I was curious if DeepSeek could do it.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•A return to visiting websites directly rather than searching seems to have been forced upon us. Would it be useful to build a wiki for web resources so people can find and bookmark websites by topic?English
5·1 year agoI like the sociable aspect of webrings, literally paying it forward and backward to two arbitrary websites on your own website. However, I don’t see how it helps searching for and finding a specific website as one would have to traverse the whole ring. A search engine incorporating the whole ring resolves this though.
As for OP’s specific question, synced bookmarks go a long way. I’ve also got quick terminal commands so I can immediately search on a website without having to open the browser and going to that website first.
A Secret Web by Benjamin Hollon [found on lobste.rs] is a great read; there I discovered nifty little search engines that specifically search the Small Web, such as Marginalia Search.

3·1 year ago1 MB file size limit. That’s officially worse than email. Ridiculous.
And 100 MB if I pay? Wtf, what year is this, 2002?It’s reality. They’re not using ads or any other unethical means of profit seeking. Imagine if everyone started using Matrix and no one paid, where do you suppose the money should come from to pay for the servers? It’s like going to the grocery store and being outraged that fruit has a price tag; “what the fuck, I can’t just take this?”
Also, I can’t remember ever sending files nearing 100 ㎆ via chat. Just use a cloud service and send the URL.
All these free services have made us spoiled, lazy, and greedy. I’ve written some related essay about it:
What if I paid for all my free software?
I’ve always felt guilty by taking for granted the rare breed of virtuous humans that provide free excellent software without relying on advertising. Let’s change that and pay, how much would I “lose” anyway? —https://www.arscyni.cc/file/take_my_money.html1 MB file size limit. That’s officially worse than email. Ridiculous. And 100 MB if I pay?
