Programming@programming.dev•What's your favorite IDE right now?
5·1 year agoHelix is awesome. I’ve spent many hours these passed months configuring both Sway and Helix to my liking, and it has become joyous to use them together. I prefer Helix’s default configs to vim’s. Still got to use Vim motions a lot though, in Obsidian etc. Similar in many aspects, but there are many small things Helix does which I find more logical. u for undo and U for redo. Small things.

Programming@programming.dev•Rust Book for Devs with an OO Programming Background
5·1 year agoThanks for the tip. I’ll add this to my reading list. I’m currently reading through “the rust book” right now, seems this will be the ideal followup. Also got through a book on data-oriented design recently, then I need to finish reading the book on Bevy, and then I think I’ll be ready to switch to Rust and the Bevy engine. A lot of reading this year, but I can tell I’ll be happy with rust and ECS before long.

13·1 year agoI switched from Fedora to openSUSE recently and it has been painless. Would recommend to anyone who are looking to get away from US companies and US jurisdiction. Edit: note that it uses RPM package manager though, I don’t know yet if that is problematic or not. If someone knows then please elaborate on that.

Linux@programming.dev•Fedora 42 installer defaults to btrfs? What's everyone's opinion or experience on that?
2·1 year agoI was pleasantly surprised to learn this with openSUSE as well last week. It already saved my buttocks once when I messed up something with the greetd config file. Recovering from the latest working snapshot was easy. OpenSUSE is a very nice distro. Bought some merch to support them a bit.

2·1 year agoAh nice. I had made the assumption that this was American based on the name and wrapping. Guess I will give this a try the next time I’m out for some chocolate 🙂.

Linux@programming.dev•Sway 1.11-rc1 Released With Many New Features & New Wayland Protocols
4·1 year agoAlright, I think I understood some of those words. Happy to see Sway being worked on. I did a clean install with openSUSEway last week and slowly but surely I’m starting to get it into the state I want from it. Hopefully this will be my final desktop environment.

Europe@feddit.org•To join or not to join? Norway is edging closer to the EUEnglish
1·1 year agoWe probably would not stand to gain much. Our ex-prime minister Solverg is advocating for it because we would have a seat at the table and influence the economy that affects us more. Some economists say it would be beneficial economically for similar reasons, in addition to making the Euro our currency so trading with other European countries would be more stable and predictable, since now you pay less or more depending on how they fluctuate. The Norwegian Crowns (NOK) is not doing so well the past 10 years and there are worries that it will not recover again etc. I like the NOK currency myself. Depending on what business you are in having the crown become worth less could be a good thing.

Europe@feddit.org•To join or not to join? Norway is edging closer to the EUEnglish
2·1 year agoI dunno. We like being able to make our own decisions and self-govern. I’d be surprised if the majority voted in favor of joining the EU even now. As the article states, yeah it seems the common citizen want to distance themselves from the US now, but we live a pretty good life already and there are many unknowns regarding what joining the EU will mean for us in the long term. I don’t wanna join the EU just to spite the US, however tempting that is right now. Though I believe signaling the middle finger to the US government is important, – I will do it in other ways in the short term at least. I have started moving all personal products and services out of US companies and into the EU etc.
Nice! Already bought your book, but holding off on reading it a bit till later in the year when I will switch to Bevy. When do you think you will be finished with the book?
