While most of the comments are correctly pointing out the late-stage capitalism as the main culprit, I must add something I didn’t see mentioned: COVID-19 pandemic.

To me, a Zennial, it was the main once-in-a-generation disgrace event. I still clearly remember the days when I began reading about a “mysterious pneumonia-like disease noticed among the patients from an ophthalmologist in Wuhan”, the first cases reported in South Korea, all the way to the outbreak in Italy, then World Health Organization finally declaring it a pandemic in March 11th 2020 (I can’t forget this specific date, either).

COVID-19 left so many marks. Emotional, as millions died from it; biological, as many who survived lived or are still living with the “Long COVID-19 syndrome”; and also societal, as it fundamentally shaped society as we know it.

I feel like I was never the same after I first got COVID-19. It’s as if my entire existence became split between “before 2020” and “after 2020”.

Maybe, just maybe, one of the explanations would be that SARS-CoV-2 is known to affect more than the respiratory system, it can also affect the brain. SARS-CoV-2 or not, the pandemic truly messed up with our brains as a society, I became sort of traumatized by it and so were countless other people, especially from my generation, because we spend a significant part of our adulthood with a world struggling to fight a virus. It was also the first time we experienced the concept of quarantine/lockdown (I was already an introvert person who’s accustomed with staying indoors, but the pandemic messed up with my graduation because I couldn’t elaborate my thesis, let alone present it, until I ended up giving up of a bachelor degree).

So, if I were to guess, the disgraces that followed up to nowadays, including the late-stage capitalism, seem to be heavily tied to that pandemic six years ago (which I remember as if it were yesterday).

Ah, verdade, as MVNOs, né? Já tinha ouvido falar, inclusive, da Correios Celular que, ao meu ver, parece ser a mais ideal pelo fato de pertencer a uma estatal (e portanto não à uma empresa privada querendo vampirizar clientes). Mas não conheço muito sobre MVNOs. São boas mesmo? É tranquilo fazer portabilidade de número? Pelo fato de dependerem da infraestrutura das operadoras grandes que possivelmente vão acabar priorizando clientes da operadora que opera aquela infra (exemplo: Tim priorizaria clientes da Tim ao invés de clientes da Correios Celular que opera pela infra da Tim), como é a qualidade e cobertura de sinal? (principalmente em áreas de interior; pra contexto, atualmente sou do Sul de Minas e noto que até grandes operadoras às vezes acabam tendo perda de sinal por aqui, o que provavelmente afetaria também a cobertura das MVNOs)

E quando essas merdas vêm das próprias operadoras? Será que as operadoras vão bloquear a si próprias? (A lista de mensagens na captura de tela a seguir só não tem maior frequência porque tenho o hábito de deixar no Modo Avião e/ou desativar os cartões SIM, senão certamente eu ia ter mais mensagens; ah, sem contar as mensagens do tipo que vêm quando usamos um número sufixado por um jogo-da-velha, mas disparadas pela operadora sem a invocação do número em questão, que não entram como SMS/MMS/RCS).

Por um lado, eu sou da linha mais “radical” de que o Xuíter, assim como plataformas de corporações Estrago-unidenses (Google e seu YouTube, Meta e o quarteto Facebook-Instagram-WhatsApp-Threads, Oracle e seu TikTok ocidentalizado, entre tantos outros) têm como única serventia o boicote total e irrestrito, sem nem mesmo o uso de meios alternativos para dar-lhes IBOPE.

O Xuíter principalmente, já que se tornou comprovadamente um Bar do Adolfo (o dono do Xuíter sendo literalmente um Adolfo; já notaram como o símbolo do X é meio caminho andado para outro símbolo que parece uma hélice?) e daí tem aquele ditado originalmente anglófono: “Se, em uma mesa de bar, há uma pessoa rodeada de dez nazistas e a pessoa não se levanta da mesa, então há onze nazistas”. Espiar a mesa de fora do bar (exemplo, através do Xcancel ou Nitter) não é tão diferente de não levantar da mesa. É resultado do tal do paradoxo da intolerância.

Não só falo, pratico: excluí minha conta quando a plataforma ainda se chamava “Twitter”, pouco depois da Varsóvia digital passar a estar sob nova direção. Cheguei a usar o Nitter em duas ou três ocasiões, pra nunca mais, principalmente depois daquele infame gesto feito por Adolfo Mosca. O mesmo fiz e faço com o YouTube, onde eu costumava produzir conteúdo até o momento em que a crescente merdificação me fez dizer “basta” e excluir anos de vídeos e, em dado momento, parar de usar Invidious e similares porque eram formas indiretas de sinalizar ao Google “ei, Pichai, a merdificação que vocês estão fazendo vale a pena, continuem a boa merdificação”.

Sim, isso limita e muito a quantidade de conteúdo que tenho acesso. Sim, minha existência ficou mais chata (espaço para o meme “always have been”). Mas antes eu ceder a (falsa sensação de) comodidade do que eu ceder meus valores. Há todo um universo de conteúdo fora das grandes plataformas, espacialmente na chamada “Teia profunda” (Deep Web, que não necessariamente tem a ver com Tor/Onion como dita a generalização popular… por exemplo, o próprio Fediverso pode ser chamado de Deep Web, porque muito do conteúdo aqui postado não está indexado pelos motores de busca), e é esse universo de conteúdo que busco acessar.

Por outro lado… eu meio que entendo a necessidade de acessar o “lado de lá” (como um Alan Turing usando o Bombe pra decodificar as comunicações do Enigma), a fim de conferir a veracidade de uma captura de tela de um “tweet” ou… (pausa e inspiração profunda pra eu não vomitar)… “truths” do “Truth Social”. Talvez o pessoal usasse o Nitter e Xcancel mais nesse propósito do que o de “apreciar” o Bar do Adolfo à distância. Mas o que havia pra ser “verificado” lá que já não fosse de conhecimento público, como os planos cristonazifascistas do grupelho que tenta implementar um quarto reich inspirados nas profecias de Cassandra presentes em obras como Terminator, Idiocracy, Mad Max, 1984, Black Mirror e Don’t Look Up?

Em todo caso, faço um adendo: há em andamento uma tentativa de consolidar mais ainda poder nas redes mainstream. Hoje mesmo, a plataforma antifascista de hospedagem (emails, blogs, etc) noblogs.org, oferecida pelo grupo Autistici/Inventati, teve os domínios revocados após o lixo laranja “declarar” o grupo Autistici/Inventati como “organização terrorista”. O Luanti, um motor e jogo de código aberto de voxels em mundo aberto (similar, mas não igual, ao Minecraft) foi novamente derrubado por alegações de violação de Copyright (DMCA) por (não ironicamente) um algoritmo (IA) que foi treinado em dados raspados da web (portanto, o robô que derrubou o Luanti por alucinar uma violação de Copyright só existe através de reais violações de Copyright, mas como é um robô da Google, né…).

Há, portanto, uma guerra em andamento, e usar Xuíter, YouTube e qualquer outra plataforma de corporações Estrago-unidenses (e isso inclui o Cloudflare que a galera tem usado pra tentar barrar os clankers, quando o próprio Cloudflare tem uma rede de clankers própria, portanto quando um website usa Cloudflare para combater IA está, na prática, alimentando outra IA e deixando Matthew Prince mais rico do que já é como o sujeito mais rico de todo o estado Estrago-unidense de Utah) é como usar produtos e serviços da IBM na década de 30, com o dinheiro (ou o poder/dados sendo cedidos) indo pra financiar o projeto de poder que inspira o grupo contemporâneo sendo financiado e apoiado por Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin e Larry Page, Pichai e demais plutocratas.

Have you ever seen a “This site uses cookies, accept / reject”? This has a name, it’s called CONSENT.

I’ll repeat: there’s something called CONSENT. I.e. the ability (and the right) for someone to CONSENT.

Could one fight a non-consensual relationship, AI crawlers DDosing the hell out of the whole Web, by pushing non-consensual relationships, injection of third-party JS code programmed to solve cryptographic challenges without prior consent of the user?

Because this is precisely my point when I criticize Cloudflare, Anubis, Google Recaptcha and whatever other “Proof-of-work anti-bot solution” out there.

NONE of the mentioned solutions ask for user consent before proceeding with the challenge (e.g. “this site needs to check your browser through heavy computation, proceed / leave”). The “challenge” starts as soon as the page is accessed, as in, zero clicks required for them to start using the CPU (thus, my apologies, I called these things simply as “malware”, I should’ve called these things “zero-click attack”).

To make things worse, the “challenge” can accommodate itself across multiple CPU cores by using JS SharedWorkers, thus effectively getting to using 100% of the CPU, regardless of any other parallel uses of CPU (e.g. other tabs opened at the background, or other software doing jobs). Using a 100% of CPU for a couple seconds, potentially minutes depending on the current difficulty level, WILL increase temp. Laptops are particularly sensitive to CPU temp due to lack of proper cooling, so it can easily get to 90C, which is a dangerous temp.

And I’m unable to know beforehand if a website injects “anti-bot challenge” when I stumble upon a link on social media.

My only PC is an Acer ES1-572, it got an Intel i5-7200U; if you look it up, you’ll realize it’s a decade-old laptop. I’m fucking unemployed so I can’t afford a new laptop. And if my laptop dies upon being literally fried by a long session of “checking your browser”, neither the webmasters nor the owners of the anti-bot solutions are going to give me reparation for the damage they indirectly inflicted onto my personal device. It’s, thus, on me. And still I’m the evil one? REALLY?!

But, hey, don’t worry! If you didn’t read this part, I’ll repeat it again: I’m CLOSING every website that uses one of these tools. Differently from the non-consented push of a third-party JS, I AM NOT FORCING my way into websites. If you’re a webmaster, you just need to put something like “Cookie monster!” in your document.title and my userscript will auto close your website and I’ll never visit it anymore. Unless you’re going to buy me another laptop, you stay with your sacred website while I stay with my good ol’ laptop.

Oh, and there’s the irony: those whirling machines at hyperscale data centers are designed for heavy computations such as those involved in PoW cryptographic challenges, and the AI techbros got “infinite money cheat” to spin up new ones… Techbros are likely laughing at the naivete of Anubis; Cloudflare, a corp with an AI suite of their own (another sweet irony; fight AI crawlers by feeding your content directly to another AI corp) are laughing at all the power and content being handed freely to them (sometimes webmasters are even paying for Cloudflare to be given content for their AI suite!). Meanwhile, me, an unemployed Brazilian, am compelled to avoid the so-called “modern web” if I don’t want my only old laptop to unwittingly become a dead weight… and I’m even accused of working for AI companies!

While Cloudflare, as well as Anubis and other “anti-bot solutions”, do behave like MitM, they only become a MitM in two situations:

- When the webmaster injects one of those third-party malware into their website.
- Very unlikely, when the network administrator (e.g. the wi-fi from a library or university) is deliberately acting as a MitM through a transparent proxy, and it’s somehow using Cloudflare.

As for me, personally, I don’t see these anymore. I built myself an userscript (FireMonkey), targeted at every domain, programmed to do a window.close() (close the tab) if the title is one of the strings “Just a moment…” (Cloudflare), “Making sure you’re not a bot!” (Anubis), “Cookie monster!” (also Anubis), “Checking you are not a bot” (some Anubis fork) or “One more step” (Google recaptcha). If the title matches, the tab is closed before any non-consented cryptographic challenge (i.e. those “solutions” don’t even dare to ask for user consent before “checking the browser”, therefore it’s a non-consented relationship and a behavior indistinguishable that of a malware) starts to overwhelm my decade-old laptop CPU.

Yes, this means I’m not having access to whatever content is behind the wannabe-cryptojacking tool, but if the webmaster does not respect my personal device and my right to consent (i must emphasize: all those “solutions” start straining the CPU with cryptographic challenges as soon as the user accesses the page, without asking for user consent beforehand, therefore it’s a non-consented relationship and a malware-like behavior), I can’t help but speed-run my search for the exit door. I’m not submitting myself and my personal device to malware (the webmaster pushing CF/Anubis/etc to non-consentedly run on my laptop ain’t gonna buy another laptop for me if mine died so I’m better as far as possible from their website).

Well, we do have countless accidents involving trucks on a daily basis, and those accidents often do cause the traffic to bunch up. One of the highways I’m somewhat used to drive through, “Rodovia Fernão Dias” (MG-460), is very famous for accidents in this regard. The accidents frequently involve retreaded tires (“pneu remolde”) popping off the truck’s wheels, and the truck is often traveling way beyond 80km/h (if they were traveling below 80km/h, maybe the truck would be slightly more controllable when such a thing happened I guess)…

In practice, the speed limit does nothing (except in cases they’re caught by a speed camera, but people deliberately de-accelerate when getting close to a speed camera before speeding up again). If people were to respect the speed limits all the times, especially the truckers, maybe, just maybe, accidents would be less frequent. The ones hindering safety are often the truckers, however, I don’t really blame them; the transportation companies they’re working to often push surreal demands unto them (e.g. “you must take this cargo from Santos to Belo Horizonte in 12 hours”, a 670km trip that’d take a car 10h non-stop, depending on the conditions of Rodoanel and Fernão Dias); they often use stimulant drugs (“rebite”) to keep awake during insane days-long trips, and sometimes you can spot a truck zig-zagging and veering off to the roadside because the trucker fell asleep.

At least in Brazil, the speed limit is different for cars/motorbikes and for trucks/buses, often it’s a 3:2 ratio.

For example, a highway with a maximum speed of 130 km/h (very rare, max speed is often 120km/h) would have a maximum speed of 85 km/h for trucks and buses. This is often informed by the same vertical sign, e.g.:

If a truck is traveling at 100km/h in a highway whose speed limit (for cars and motorbikes) is 120km/h, the truck is committing a traffic violation.

I don’t remember) and threatening to run over a smaller vehicle which is trying to follow the laws and is traveling within the speed limits. People think “speed limit” means “required speed”.

I’ll check it, but… Doesn’t this risk rendering internet banking (for context, Brazilian banking) and government apps refusing to function? Last time I threatened to simply turn on developer mode (so to use things such as adb), gov.br stopped working for me (and it’s basically the 2FA app through which I’m expected to have access to public healthcare appointments, driver’s license, electoral/voter ID, etc).

I’m not saying it isn’t valid asking about the consequences for one’s own inhabiting geographic region. It’s quite expected as we experience the physical objective reality from inside each one of our subjective perspectives. And, to a certain extent, knowing about the consequences expected for one’s own country (e.g. Germany) even helps building climate awareness (i.e. so we get to be aware of how it’s not something distant from where we’re currently breathing and how it’s gonna affect each one of us).

What I’m trying to say, however, is that we shouldn’t ignore the fact that this is far from a localized matter.

It’s a global matter.

Mother Nature doesn’t even remotely take our political borders into Her considerations. She doesn’t care about how we had split the surface of Planet Earth into 2x2 hemispheres, 24 “time zones” and hundreds of so-called “countries” and “economic blocs”. Birds migrate and fly across hemispheres regardless of our migratory and passport/visa bureaucracies, viruses and pathogens will reach places as remote as Kiribati (see COVID-19 and H1N1, for example; needless to say, climate change leads to increased likelihood of pandemic events)…

When I hear about the typhoons striking China, or the simultaneous drought-flood that happened in Africa, or the heat wave striking Europe, I’m aware of how is connected with mechanisms (including, but not limited to, a supercharged ENSO) that will also affect the state of Minas Gerais where I’m currently sat down to write this reply, no matter how these places are dozens of thousands of kilometers away from me, and I’m aware how those phenomena will take place geographically closer to me as well, and how indeed it already happened when towns within “Interior paulista” (regions within the Brazilian state of São Paulo) recently got practically destroyed by a storm.

See, Earth is this hermetically-enclosed cosmic Petri dish wandering through the void veil of Laniakea Supercluster as She (Earth) revolves around a G2-type star. All the fauna (including this species self-labeled “Homo sapiens”) and flora living inside it have no means of resorting to other Petri dish (despite the fever dream of “colonizing Mars” from a specific wannabe-god Homo sapiens individual) if it’s rendered unable to sustain life due to a broken ecosystem, and a broken ecosystem isn’t limited to Germany or other European countries, or USA, or Canada, or China, or India, or Kenya, or Moçambique, or Brazil, or Kiribati… a broken ecosystem means a broken ecosystem everywhere. This is a fact, a fact we must consider as we get faced by more frequent and harsher ecological catastrophes leading to ever-higher death tolls; hence my earlier reply about this interconnectedness and the need to try and not miss the forest for the trees.

It’s worth mentioning, this community is “World news” and even the linked article, despite being focused on the Northern Hemisphere, mentions how it’s an ongoing phenomenon with worldwide reaches (e.g. “This circulation change affects the global atmosphere”). The emphasis on the global aspects of those phenomena is, thus, a must.

A significant amount of global food supply comes from Brazil (certain grains, especially coffee and soy). When it’s winter across the Northern hemisphere, it’s summer here in the Southern hemisphere. And that’s the thing: we (Brazil) are already facing the effects of this super El Niño, including but not limited to, cyclones. The Brazilian Southern (inc. Rio Grande do Sul), a region mostly responsible for rice production, is a region where floods have became ubiquitous in the latest years. Even though I’m a Brazilian, I don’t quite remember all the observable consequences of climate change and/or El Niño across the Brazilian territory as I’m writing this reply. All I remember for sure is that we’ve been facing climate catastrophes way before this Super El Niño appeared, and now it’s poised to be worse. Where I live, the southeast Brazil, I’ve been noticing more and more unstable climate, sudden and quite dangerous “ciclones bomba” (“bomb cyclones”, or explosive cyclogenesis), strong winds out of nowhere, among other phenomena.

One of the major mistakes that we humans keep commiting is this kind of thinking: “how it will affect my region”, as if the planet Earth wasn’t this interconnected, interdependent ecosystem. There’s this thing, “butterfly effect”, in which “a flap of a butterfly wing in Brazil can set off a tornado in Texas”; although the phrase per se is obviously hyperbolic, we do observe when disturbances (from ecological, as in fauna and flora, to economical, as in fewer yield from agricultural activities) on a region inevitably leads to consequences for other regions, no matter the apparent geographic distance, no matter the borders. In fact, Mother Nature does not care about our social construct “borders/frontiers”, and the El Niño, supercharged by the anthropogenic climate change, is a chilling demonstration of this.

In Portuguese, “omelete” is masculine-gendered noun ("fiz um omelete”, “I made an omelette” with the “um” being the undefined masculine article / “fez o omelete?”, “did you make the omelette” with the “o” being the defined masculine article). Similarly, “ovo” (egg) is masculine-gendered noun (“um ovo” / “o ovo”). On the other hand, “crepioca” (which is quite similar to an omelette but made with “tapioca” flour) is feminine-gendered (“uma crepioca” / “a crepioca”). “Tapioca” is also a feminine-gendered noun.

Oh… I’m the one who must beg pardon, upon re-reading our exchange I noticed I sounded harsh, I truly didn’t mean to. It was intended as an advice, not just to you but to everyone reading as well. Please take the time you need, migration across platforms is never easy, and like I’m going to say in the following paragraphs, it’s definitely not a 1:1 migration.

I used to watch hundreds of channels, including but not limited to ElectroBoom, Veritassium, Technology Connections, Practical Engineering, and similar STEM channels. I also used to produce some content myself (mostly technical experiments with steganography and novel ciphers, but also some esoteric content), even though my channel was very small and with the content often using Creative Commons licensing.

As I was faced by increasing enshittification from Youtube, including but not limited to stumbling upon advertisement pitches verging the dangerous (malware, scam/bets, etc), I took this decision that was far from easy, especially due to how I used to enjoy the aforementioned channels.

But then, it’s partly on those science communicators to keep themselves and their audiences captive of a monopolistic platform. If people migrated to something else en masse, similarly to how it happened regarding Twitter (people mostly migrated to Bluesky; not the perfect choice, considering there’s Mastodon right at the corner of the street, but at least people went from a monopoly on microblogging, to something “less monopolistic”).

I, the one viewer less in their daily numbers, am mere dust in the wind, but if other people started doing the same, then it’d be a phenomenon that couldn’t be ignored; content creators often are where the audience is, and when (if) the audience makes this hard decision of going somewhere less monopolistic, either they follow their audience to the new place, or they’d be left with the “audience” from Google Gemini. Hence my active campaign to advise people to start boycotting Youtube, even though most of the valuable content is still kept hostage within Youtube hosting; content creators would likely follow if this exodus happened in a significant number.

I mean, please don’t get me wrong, I definitely agree with everything you said. It’s just… we should also be doing a similar thing (supporting the good ones) when it comes to video platforms.

PeerTube, for example, is part of the Fediverse we’re currently on. It really pisses me off whenever I see a Youtube link being shared through the Fediverse (and especially in a Lemmy community whose name is Privacy), given we do have alternatives.

It’s been a little more than two years since I stopped using Youtube altogether (I don’t even use the alternative front-ends). My boycott against Youtube isn’t enough, because Youtube links keep popping up in Lemmy threads oftentimes. And because Lemmy would go a step further and try to embed the Youtube player in place of the hyperlink (therefore phoning Google automatically) when it’s a thread (not your case, yours appears as a hyperlink because it’s a comment), I had to manually add youtube.com and youtu.be iframe domains to my uBO network filtering.

Goes without saying, I don’t have a Facebook, either.

Por um lado, o TLD (domínio de nível do topo) de um domínio pouco diz sobre a credibilidade do site a esse associado, e (até onde sei) qualquer pessoa pode abrir um .org em registrars internacionais. Idealmente, um .org.br seria mais confiável no sentido de estar sob o TLD brasileiro .br (e até onde sei o registro.br tem regras mais rígidas para abertura de domínios). Para uma campanha brasileira, esperar-se-ia um .br no final do domínio.

Além disso, há um documento “Política de Privacidade” acessível por um link no rodapé do site, um documento cujos termos vinculam o site a um CNPJ de uma associação civil sem
fins lucrativos que já existe há vários anos, segundo a Receita Federal. Tais termos, aliás, apontam para um domínio .org: nossas.org.

Por outro lado, alguns detalhes desse site são, pra mim pessoalmente, questionáveis. Não vou entrar muito em detalhes técnicos, até porque são detalhes mais relacionados aos meus valores ideológicos anti-imperialismo-estadunidense (como minha oposição ao uso de um registrar estadunidense GoDaddy sendo que talvez pudessem ter usado um registrar brasileiro; minha desconfiança da utilização que ambos os websites da campanha e da associação estão fazendo de tecnologias como Google Tag e Amazon Web Services, tecnologias essas pertencentes a empresas estadunidenses Google e Amazon).

De qualquer forma, seja essa ou outras campanhas, independente de qual organização ou empresa for, e independente do TLD do(s) domínio(s) do(s) website(s) a esta associado(s), recomendo cada pessoa sempre checar por conta própria e decidir com base naquilo que está publicamente disponível e publicamente verificável: informações de WHOIS do domínio, políticas de privacidade, registro do CNPJ na Receita Federal, entre outros. A “política de privacidade” e consequentemente consulta do CNPJ na Receita Federal foram as primeiríssimas coisas que fui verificar antes de constatar as outras informações públicas como o WHOIS do domínio e as conexões de rede a terceiros (Google e AWS) que o website fez enquanto eu por ali navegava.
