There’s always so much money to be made running care homes - children’s homes, nursing homes, halfway homes etc.

All these used to be run completely by the government, but they’ve been moved into the private sector supposedly because that’s the only way to make them provide better service at lower cost. This article is about unregulated children’s home providers, but even ones that are fully legit often fail to provide a good standard of care.

The staff at these privatised institutions always seem to be earning absolute rock-bottom wages, so where is all the money going?

It’s a very interesting effect. I found the video fascinating, just because it’s kind of amazing how our brains can so clearly see these moving shapes, while if you pause the video at any point, the shapes disappear. I guess it’s how we evolved to see predators with camouflaged fur moving through the environment?

I’m curious to see the game the dev makes from it. Definitely potential for a unique and captivating game but there’s going to be some challenges to overcome on the way.

In my case (blessed with not having to work with Windows), the kludgy feel of how workspaces previously worked with multiple monitors has sometimes made me not bother connecting them up.

The old way tries to merge the two monitors into a single screen, and so when your monitors have different resolutions, your “single screen” is now sort of L-shaped. Which would cause weird effects on some DEs where for instance dragging a window off the edge of the smaller monitor wouldn’t work, as width of the “single screen” was taken to be the width of the larger monitor not the smaller one. (I must add that KDE is not one of these DEs, and you can drag off the edge like that)

There are still some behaviours with per-screen virtual desktops that I hope might be fixed in future - such as “Zoom Desktop” (Meta+mousewheel). I use this quite a bit for reducing the black bars on extra wide aspect ratio films, and it does zoom both monitors at the moment. I don’t know if it’d be practical to have this feature just zoom one desktop, but it would be great for me when I’m working and have Netflix on at the same time.

The LTS I assume? That’s annoying, my VPS has been on 24.04 and I’m looking forward to upgrading to 26.04 just for the newer PHP version (without using a 3rd party PPA). I’m waiting for 26.04.01 before making the move.

How many others are loving the “per-screen virtual desktops” feature introduced with 6.7?

It seems there’s a small (?) contingent of people who’ve been clamouring for this ever since multi-monitor setups became commonplace. Then there’s a whole nother load of people who don’t care.

Do many people here even use multiple workspaces? I know many just have all apps open on the visible workspace and alt-tab between them.

The phenomenon they’ve identified doesn’t seem to be cannabis-specific at all. The finding really seems to be, “capitalism will pursue profits at the expense of customers’ well-being”.

Which isn’t going to be news to anyone but the most deluded libertarian. It’s a great example of why we absolutely need government to impose sensible regulations on business, because otherwise short-term profiteering will win over long-term societal good.

Cannabis, as it moves from illegal black markets to legitimacy, is just in an interesting position to highlight these kinds of effects.

Same as most European countries, Germany has the adversarial system - no jury, just the judge.

Don’t know about elsewhere, but in Germany, for some trials, there are an additional 1 or 2 “lay judges” - non-professional judges from the community.

English is very widely spoken there, it’s the lingua franca (and one of the country’s official languages), so anyone who can read is most likely able to read English. Sadly the people Russia preys on are quite probably mostly illiterate (in any language).

If I’m getting it right, they’re basically questioning the quantities mentioned and how Ecosia is presenting this whole thing.

The blog post says they saved 4000 tonnes, or 800 elephants, of potatoes from going to waste.

However the 4000-tonnen.de website - which seems to be a site that Ecosia have set up just for this problem of surplus potatoes - says that only 174 tonnes will have been delivered to Berlin:

Kommende Woche werden vorr. 132 Tonnen verteilt (nach 42 Tonnen in der ersten Woche). Dann wird es allerdings kalt - was für die Kartoffeln nicht gut ist - und mehr können wir auch nicht finanzieren.

The last sentence says it’s going to be cold which is bad news for spuds and in any case they are not able to finance any more.

So are they really just saving 174 out of 4000 tonnes, and yet somehow presenting it as a victory against food waste?

TBH it seems like a marketing stunt - not necessarily a bad thing, if they can draw attention to the difficulties of avoiding food waste. But still, they need to be honest and not deceitful or it can easily backfire.

The big unanswered question seems to be what’s going to happen to the remaining 3826 tonnes?

is it pretty much a way to do bank transfers without having to give away your IBAN? I don’t think IBANs need to be kept secret but they’re a bit unwieldy to say the least - and transfers are not always instant.
