Jellyfin player’s UI in TV mode reacts only to up/down/left/right and enter and escape. you can use InputRemapper if your weapon of choice isn’t recognized. also, jellyfin android apps connect to the player directly and you can control it from there.

fine learning experience, but this thing does nothing you’d use your TV for.

the cheapest and best solution is to grab a busted-up laptop from your marketplace. broken screens, keyboards, missing batteries, whatever, you won’t use none of those things. make sure it’s skylake (6th gen) or newer for hardware video acceleration and on-board LAN and HDMI, the rest is unimportant. you’ll have an insanely powerful and power-efficient platform that you control 100% of and can tweak to your heart’s desire, expand, fix, etc. I’d be surprised if you can’t find several for under $40, power brick included.

my go-to setup is auto-launching jellyfin player in TV mode with macast running in the background (DLNA sink you can send youtube videos and the like). since you’ll have computing power to spare, this can also be a server, whatever you desire.

this used to be a job for raspberries, but them things are insanely expensive now and necessitate ever more expensive shit. please don’t even joke about letting noname android boxes loose on your LAN.

I imagine most people here already know this, but - you don’t really need anything but git installed on the server. you can create a repo, push to it, pull off it, branch, merge, do whatever you can with the cli, all that web GUI is just optional. integrates just fine with vscode and clones.

so if you don’t need a web UI, a truly lightweight solution is already preinstalled.

I got the DODI repack and it works fine in lutris

debootstrap handles that, arch-install-scripts has got a lot of helpful tools. after the initial install, you arch-chroot to it and install stuff you want, via apt, tasksel, etc.

when you connect the PSU, does the laptop power on or do you have to press the power button? mine doesn’t power on on its own, with or without battery.

very cool. wanted to do exactly that something similar with a Lenovo Ideapad I found. except, I don’t want to buy the adapter board, I just wanna utilise the existing two SATA ports in the laptop; one HDD, one DVD. haven’t figured a zerospend way to do that, as the SATA ports on the MB are female, as are the cables.

way more modern CPU and chipset resulting in better power management; also faster and better graphics, but that’s not important for the use case. an undervolted i5 5250u can run with wifi and lit screen in the sub-5W range, netting you 10ish hours of continuous light use out of a decent battery and days of standby (that you can turn into weeks if you implement suspend-then-hibernate). you could make an earilier model work but the price difference should be in the $20 range, so why bother?

edit: microSD, yeah, I guess you can boot off them but why would you want the flaky and slow mess when you got a perfectly fine PCI-E SSD?

anyone drone-savvy up in here, can recommend cheap drones that are okayish wrt range, carry capacity, ease of hacking, zero clown shit, etc? ideally some white-label that’s globally available…

macbook air 11 2015 8gb version. just this one and no other, no 13, no 2013, no 4 gb versions, etc.

very linux friendly (once you sort out broadcom wifi drivers), sips power, tolerates undervolt. it’s useless to the apple crowd as it don’t got support for latest OS so it can be had for cheap, even more so if you wanna buy busted units and frankenstein together a new one. also, wide cross-gen parts compatibility. aliexpress got $5 USB-C to Magsafe2 adapter so you don’t gotta haul the charger around.

don’t get the 12" ones, unless they’re close to free. spectacular screen, but the keyboard is atrocious and prone to die, with no option of replacing it, SSD is integrated so can’t get the data off it if something dies, fragile display connection, it’s a shit-show.

the author is the co-dev of cwtch with a proven track record of shipping product. as they state, it’s impossible for any one dev to take on a product of this magnitude but I’m cautiously optimistic about this thing being in a position to gain contributors at this point.

the video blows, dude. jolla are opensource takers, they don’t have a free tier so you can’t just install it and take it for a spin. so an actual “here’s how it works” video is beneficial.

my contention is that sailfish should be the next thing, after wrangling it out of the hands of those fucks. not forked android, not tweaked gnome shell on postmarketos.

this video wastes time on converting imaginary people over who don’t know they’re being spied on (the three hour long, or so it felt, intro with pichai and friends) showing ubuntu touch (wtf) and the presenter’s face in the frame for what feels like 90% of the video.
