The users are not the customers. Youtube (and others) collects and generates a ton of data from their users and sell ad space to their real customers, advertisers.

I wouldn’t even mind some clearly distinguishable banner ads here and there, but the last time i tried watching a video without adblocker i stopped after the third ad about two minutes in. This is just pure greed of another corporation milking the tiddies of capitalism.
