You’re probably right, but NYTimes doesn’t currently require a paid account for all of their puzzles. Me and my wife do the daily free Mini (it’s a little baby crossword) every day and don’t have to pay for it. You have to pay for access to their puzzle archive and for the main crossword though.
Not for the Mini crossword, at least. You can go to https://www.nytimes.com/crosswords/game/mini right now and you’ll get a login prompt, but there’s an option to continue without an account.
