BentiGorlich ( @BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de ) 23•1 year agoI think its great. Its for people who simply don’t want to share their phone number with other people which is a huge privacy concern, as you can find out a lot about a person by looking up info connected to their phone number.
LWD ( @LWD@lemm.ee ) 22•1 year agoJust yesterday, somebody commented that Signal might be adding the feature in a few weeks. I was incredulous, assuming it would be months.
Nope. As soon as I saw this, I went looking for an app update, installed it, and made a username.

preasket ( @preasket@lemy.lol ) 8•1 year agoThis is important context. Signal needs to make phone numbers optional…

preasket ( @preasket@lemy.lol ) 10•1 year agoYeah.
guts ( @guts@lemmy.ml ) 7•1 year agoStill register with a phone number is a red flag. I prefer SimpleX.
JoYo 🇺🇸 ( @JoYo@lemmy.ml ) English6•1 year agoomg so cool right? they finally invented usernames. IRC is jealous.
TheFrirish ( @TheFrirish@jlai.lu ) 3•1 year agoI mean it’s nice but I do not know a single pirson who uses signal

Possibly linux ( @possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip ) English2•1 year agoGreat, I’ll get more spam
Link ( @Link@rentadrunk.org ) 8•1 year agoDid you read the article? I don’t think temporary usernames will increase spam.
Possibly linux ( @possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip ) English1•1 year agoI just got a unknown sender sending me unsolicited junk and that’s never happened before
American_Jesus ( @American_Jesus@lemm.ee ) 3•1 year agoTelegram have this in a long time, and I never got any spam messages.
Try to read the article instead.
Atemu ( @Atemu@lemmy.ml ) 2•1 year agoDon’t bother with this person. All I’ve seen them do is read the post’s title and produce an (often inappropriate) reaction to said title. Peak Redditor.
kksgandhi ( @kksgandhi@lemmy.ml ) 2•1 year agoGreat feature, but if I’m reading it correctly, you won’t be able to chat with someone anonymously (because your profile will still be shared). Are there good apps for that?
scoobford ( @scoobford@lemmy.zip ) 5•1 year agoSimpleX was the best for my purposes when I looked, but Briar is a compelling option as well.
The case can also be made for element, but it lacks forward secrecy and honestly the app kinda sucks.
guts ( @guts@lemmy.ml ) 2•1 year agoSimpleX
Opafi ( @Opafi@feddit.de ) 1•1 year agoThreema?
