StarlightDust ( @StarlightDust@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) 17•8 days agoIn the UK they like North Face coats a lot of the time. They don’t really use plain clothes for protest as much anymore. A new strategy that is similar but annoying is the use of “auditors”. One of the big ones became an informant so they all copied him in becoming unaware unofficial evidence gatherers, even though the whole concept of auditing is supposedly highlighting police corruption.

Ledericas ( @Ledericas@lemm.ee ) 13•9 days agoThere have been agitators pretending to be supporters of this anti fascist protests, Andy ngo being a well known trying to pretend as one of them
huppakee ( @huppakee@lemm.ee ) 10•9 days agoWhat is a ‘thin blue line bracelet’ and why does it give away an undercover cop?
KingJalopy ( @KingJalopy@lemm.ee ) 25•9 days agoThin blue line is cop supporter shit. Back the blue, etc…
huppakee ( @huppakee@lemm.ee ) 16•9 days agoLol, shouldn’t you take that off if you go out pretending you’re with the protesters and all?
KingJalopy ( @KingJalopy@lemm.ee ) 13•9 days agoOh def but this picture is too bad to even tell if that’s why it is but I wouldn’t put it past a cop to be that dumb
Ghost (he/any) ( @Ghost33313@beehaw.org ) English3•9 days agoHypothetically enough civilians wear them as well so that alone isn’t proof. That with the cuffs is certainly enough to be wary.
Sibshops ( @Sibshops@lemm.ee ) 2•9 days agoYeah, I feel like this picture was made as satire.
Skydancer ( @Skydancer@pawb.social ) 2•9 days agoDepends on whether they want to be spotted. Sometimes the point is to be obviously intimidating and try to divide the protesters over throwing someone out. Other times it’s to be an obvious plant so that after getting rid of them the protesters think they’re no longer infiltrated and overlook the less obvious one. And sometimes it really is just incompetence.
Another thing to look for is a cell phone standing up in a shirt pocket with the camera facing forward.
tacofox ( @tacofox@lemm.ee ) 9•9 days agoCould also be used as an identifier for other officers in case they get into an altercation and need to signal “hey I’m on your side”.
I am not sure if they were being coy, but I saw another user say “color of the day” meaning that it might not just be blue, and that they could be cycling colors to obfuscate detection from protest groups on multi day protests.
Ledericas ( @Ledericas@lemm.ee ) 2•9 days agoThe thin blue line, is a buzzword for cop supporter

AItoothbrush ( @AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip ) 8•9 days agoCuffs could be snus tho. If you only spot one of these, prob not a cop but if its multiple signs then its prob a cop

LeninOnAPrayer ( @LeninOnAPrayer@lemm.ee ) English7•8 days agoSometimes they take them off and put them on the back of their backwards hat while undercover. What happened here is they were either stolen or fell off. But you can always pick out the facial indent and tan line if they’re missing.
fun fact: you can tell how long someone has been a cop by the depth of the Oakley indent on their face.
When can rebel groups create an AI that analyzes behaviors to determine if someone is a cop or not? Governments use AI to analyze protesters by the way they walk, we should use AI against the oppressors.
TipsyMcGee ( @TipsyMcGee@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) 8•8 days agowe should use AI against the oppressors
I don’t share your optimism re the alignment of AI.
We just need a few of those working on AI to just leak the data, then the rebels can reprogram/recalibrate it and repurpose it for the resistance.
Or someone can hack their database. 👀
