Not only are they not necessary, they’re actually harmful to existence. Admittedly I use YouTube somewhat through privacy front ends, but quitting all the others has been great for my health. Using nebula has also minimised my use of YouTube.

YouTube is the only one left for me as well and I’ve been considering Nebula myself. One thing I do try to avoid though is all of the rage bait stuff. I actively filter it out and focus only on videos that teach me things. So a lot of science, food, carpentry, and other crafty kind of channels and videos. Oh, and a lot of animal ones.

Because I like supporting the small creators of the content I enjoy? Because it’s only like $35-40 for an entire year? Because I find YouTube to be full of slop? Because Nebula doesn’t use an algorithm?

              I could go on.

There are private youtube front-ends like freetube that don’t have an algorythm. If you think youtube is full of slop then just don’t watch the slop.

Nebula is still centralized and has a much more limited content selection that requires a process for new creators to join. Also I’m not sure what you would define as small but many content creators on that platform earn way more than enough money.

If you want to support creators you can donate through them directly.

Look I hate youtube and google as much as you, I just don’t think nebula is the solution we should be looking for. We should be advocating for free, decentralised alternatives. Not another for proffit business that advocates itself as being friendly and community centered before enshitifying as soon as it gets popular enough.

I already don’t watch the slop, because I watch more content on Nebula and Patreon than I do on Google’s platform. That’s kind of the point, you know? YouTube is full of slop, and watching it in any way can support the slop they send to the masses, even if you aren’t seeing it yourself. No algorithms should be a default thing, not something only power users will even think of doing. That’s what I was saying about Nebula. If you don’t want to use one of the many private frontends for it, you still do not get an algorithm.

I vastly prefer Nebula and Patreon to YouTube in every way. Nebula may be centralized, but it’s no where near to the enshittification of YouTube. It is currently better, so I’m happy to use it. If it enshittifies, I’ll just stop using it, because you can do that.

I never said Nebula was a solution to anything other than not being YouTube while having the content creators they enjoy. It’s great at that, the cut they give creators is much better, there isn’t an insane amount of tracking, etc. If the content creator I enjoy is on both YouTube and Nebula, I’m going to use Nebula every time, because then I don’t have to support Google. You know, one of the biggest companies in the world, which is worth trillions? The one that peddles slop, spies on you, and intentionally makes their platform as addictive as possible?

Video is unfortunately a very expensive thing to store and network. The quality of content on Nebula is better than most things you can find on decentralized alternatives partly because it is able to actually pay creators. That will continue to be the main thing stopping creators from using decentralized platforms, unfortunately. That is not to say some aren’t successful on it or making high quality content, of course. It’s just a lot more rare than the centralized alternatives.

Also, do you think that the only creators on Nebula are Wendover and Tom Scott? There are plenty on there that are no where near that size, and are small creators. I’m not sure why you think small creators should get shafted because large creators exist on the platform.

It seems that you’re okay with people using YouTube if they use a private frontend. But you’re not okay with promoting a different platform entirely, so people can completely avoid YouTube? It isn’t making sense to me.

YouTube is problematic because it isn’t really the platform that is valuable, it is the content creators.

A more appropriate alternative to it is GrayJay app, which tries to remove YouTube monopoly by supporting multiple platforms. If enough people would use that, content creators could really migrate from one platform to another.

        • Peertube is probably the closest. I don’t really use either, but I’ve understood that peertube is a bit lacking in content.

As you’re here on lemmy.ml, I doubt it, but if you happen to be a “cryptocurrency enthusiast”, then odysee might also be an option, though I’m not sure hiw much of it is open-source.

If longform video is your thing, I would highly suggest Nebula. I’ve paid £27.30 for a years subscription. Creators say they get paid fairly and can make content without censorship. It has been exactly what I’m into.

Hard to call it an ai company when it doesn’t make ai models, proton is no more an ai company then the many companies adding ai to their website as an assistant

They don’t have their own ai, they have an ai frontend which runs preexisting open weight ai models.

Proton does have a lot of fans probably because they are the most well known ‘privacy’ company and a lot of people set and forget without reading into them.

The last time I went through TSA (earlier this year), I no longer saw the signs saying you could opt-out, but I was still able to opt out.

The TSA agent got annoyed at me for not leading with that, though. Like… buddy… We exchanged greetings, and then I said no thank you to the face scan. It’s not my fault that you jumped the gun. I’m trying to not be rude about another unnecessary invasion of privacy.

    • Yes, but at the very LEAST, it’s being done by a government controlled entity that’s subject to data security auditing and some sort of regulated process for handling that data.

These social media services are going to hold on to those scans, sell them for advertising data, and store them on dubiously secured servers.

Sadly, that government body pays private companies (palantier, cough cough) on the back end. They combine the data with a gazillion other datasets paid for by taxpayers. Since this is what they call “model training” you can’t unring that bell from that point on. Immutable data on an evil corporation’s dataset, for as long as data can be stored.

  • My face gets scanned by city run cameras everytime i go to the super market, and then the supermarket scans my face as well, not to mention smart passports with face scanning or whatever were introduced pre 2010. It’s too late

Unfortunately, while the left is generally better on this, the mass surveillance state has bipartisan support among the ruling class. My state legislature is all dems and yet you still have to consent to share your info with Google, Microsoft, and a number of AI startups in order to check your EBT balance or submit documents online.

I hate to say this but I am an Instagram user. They asked me to scan my face to “check if I’m a bot”, and they banned me even after I scanned my face. And no, I didn’t post my dick to a reel. This is bullshit.

I had to scan my face a hundred times already for a hundred different places…

Hell, I live in a closed colony and the only way in is with a face scan. My biometric data is surely for sale in a hundred different places by now, so I guess I don’t really care anymore

Its not like I have an option if I still want to get home
