In particular, the government is proposing a new housing partnership directly with Manitoba, investing $1 billion through Build Canada Homes. The money will go to transitional housing and wraparound services – personalized supports that aim to address overlapping issues — in Winnipeg, and to building 2,000 new transitional and permanent supportive housing units in the city.
Looks like a pretty large chunk of this is going to programs that actually produce houses and putting homeless people in them this looks pretty good on the surface, another chunk going to healthcare and mental health in general seems pretty great. 28billion is nothing to sneeze at. I’m not sure it will completely end homelessness but I do think this will help a lot of people and at first glance seems to at least somewhat align with what experts recommend.
Apparently Carney will be in Winnipeg tomorrow to expand on the plan - from this article, it looks like they’re going to be supporting the strategies that have been rolled out by the provincial government over the last year, rather than replacing them.
How about taxing vacant homes and apartments held by corporations?
But not just corporations. A few of my friends rented a basement suite from offshore buyers. They buyer initially lived in the home, then once basement was tennated they moved back to China. 3000 and 4000 sq foot homes empty on main and upper floor for over 2 years.
I think it’ll be easier to go after corporate landlords than individuals who got their life savings tied into 1 or 2 houses. Far more of those homeowners will support the policy if they’re assured they aren’t being targeted for having a networth of 6 or 7 figures.
I know for a fact that corporations are sitting on empty properties instead of lowering rents. Governments at all levels are letting it happen when homelessness is at the highest we’ve seen in our lives.
The worst thing will be to go after random middle class landlords. They aren’t the ones causing most harm, if any. But they do vote and will vote against getting treated the same as corporate landlords.
that’s a safe timeline when you have no intention to do anything. Even Carney knows he won’t be PM in 10 years from now.
We’ve spent
30 years60 yearsliterally the entire nation’s history to create and reinforce the cycle of poverty, it seems like it should be cleaned up in, oh, I dunno, 3-4 months? Sorry, I realize that’s a little too slow for the average voter.Nothing is ever good enough… this is the second largest line item on the whole ass budget and includes halfway house funding and supported community housing initiatives. Long term solution for a long term problem or whatever.
The Liberal Party has been in power for the last 11 years. Why shouldn’t they plan to govern for 10 years at a time?
I don’t know. How long has it been since the NDP or Conservatives fielded a competent leader?
^I’ll concede that Trudeau wasn’t a completely competent leader^
