the big stickied thread is getting cluttered with lots of new people and the “how was your week” thread isn’t a great fit for introductions, so it seems about time to make this a dedicated thread of its own so peoples’ posts aren’t getting lost.

tell us a little bit about yourself, folks. don’t gotta be too specific or revealing, just whatever you want to put out there. this’ll be a good way of getting to know all the people you’re now on here with

  • Howdo champions!

I’m Darren. He/him. I live right in the middle of the south of England with my wife, where I work in quality and health and safety management.

I have a background in radio, podcasting, and welding, so if you want any tips on those very connected subjects, I’m your man. Music is my main love, but I can’t play a note.

I have ADHD, which is why I’ve been posting on here so much instead of doing what I’m getting paid to do.

      • I’m in a weird position at work, where the managing director values neither of the things I do, so doesn’t really have any idea what I’m up to. As a result, I could literally spend the entire day fucking about online, and he’d have no idea how it was affecting the outcome of what I do.

        • I kinda have the same thing. I’m pretty much an inhouse vendor so I’m the only employee in my state. I haven’t seen my manager since February and once went almost a whole year without seeing another employee from my company. I pretty much self manage which sucks with having ADHD.

          • I pretty much self manage which sucks with having ADHD.

I feel every bit of this. Because of my situation, I don’t really have anyone that I’m accountable to, beyond them occasionally seeing that I’m running some training courses, or publishing some procedure documents. But given that the MD doesn’t have a clue what procedure documents we have anyway, I slip under the radar 99% of the time, even though I work in the office.

So yeah, I spend most of the day fucking about online, feeling ever more shitty and pointless.

      • Hello!

I got my diagnosis a few years ago at 39, so yeah, I know exactly where you’re coming from.

I’ve run a few podcasts over the years, but nothing that could be considered a success really. I liked what I did, as did the half dozen or so regular listeners I was able to entice, but by and large my efforts went unnoticed, so I became disheartened and burned out and so gave up.

  • Hello, I’m Butterbee. I’m a transwoman in her 40’s who joined Beehaw at the end of January and have been mostly just browsing. My activity should be picking up; It’s energizing seeing all the new folk come by!

I’m into -3d art, mostly textures and materials but I have an appreciation for all aspects of the craft. -Gaming! I play euro truck sim 2, rimworld, and Overwatch though that’s been less and less and less and now practically none thanks to the sad state Blizzard has put themselves, their employees, and their games in. But I love that colourful optimistic heroic aesthetic. Maybe I’ll find another game with the same vibe. I will also play just about any coop game with friends. -Urbanism. I’m more on the NotJustBikes side than F*KCars. I love my ebike and want to see more changes in my community that allow me to get around without using an automobile. If we get an urbanist community here, I’ll be in there. -I am also fond of bees.

I can also bee found at @Butterbee@mastodon.art

    Beeeehaw!!

  • I’m Audrey, a long time Reddit user who signed up yesterday. I initially joined Reddit during the collapse of Digg, so, yeah, I’ve been there a while. I also dumped Twitter shortly after Elon Musk took over and switched to Mastodon; that was my first experience with the Fediverse. So far, I’ve had nothing but good experiences with the people I have met on fedi, and I hope that continues here.

Anyway, I am a 35 year old trans woman who lives in the Pacific Northwest, and my interests include video games(both modern and retro), movies(particularly the so bad it good kind), sports(well, I used to care more than I do, I only follow Seattle teams now), books(sci-fi, fantasy, history), and tech(to a degree). I do stream on Twitch from time to time, and I’m planning on switching to Linux when I build my new computer soon.

I can also be found on Mastodon at @UngodlyAudrey@retro.pizza

    Nice to meet you all!

  • I am also a redditor who came here yesterday. I am a snake and reptile loving lady (she/her) with ADHD who gets really obsessed with new and novel things, so of course I signed up for several different fediverse sites yesterday and am getting the hang of them.

For this site, I’m mainly looking for a kinder, smaller Reddit. I grew up on the internet in the early to mid 2000s and I really miss the smaller, tight-knit forum communities that were the norm back then. A small niche subreddit scratched that itch somewhat, but I still never really learned who the individual people in my frequented subreddits were, you know? It felt like less of a community.

My main hobbies are games (MMOs, simulators, cozy games, etc), crafts (cross stitch right now, but also crochet and knitting), and reading.

  • i would be remiss to not start this off myself: i’m alyaza, one of the three admins here (and probably the one you’re most likely to interact with day-to-day, although i have a lot going on). i am nonbinary and my pronouns are they or she, although i can’t imagine in most contexts on here you’d need to use them. i find a lot of stuff interesting, which i think reflects in the pretty eclectic mixture of stuff i post on here. i also read a lot, so if you’re interested in non-fiction book suggestions i would probably be a good person to turn to.

      • generally i am an equal opportunity reader. the past few months have been a climate change nonfiction binge so there are a lot of books i can talk about in that field. i’ll probably make that a separate reply since it’s so long. outside of that the most recent one i finished was Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. his entire bibliography is a pretty good read, particularly Into Thin Air about the 1996 Mount Everest disaster and Into the Wild, abut the late and eclectic wilderness guy Christopher Johnson McCandless.

The Woman Who Wasn’t There is a curious one about a fake 9/11 survivor which is accompanied by a movie of the same name. both are pretty good; i saw the movie before the book. for lighter reading, Coyote America is a fun one–that’s about the eponymous coyote and its history as a species. reaching a little further back i was also a fan of A History of America in Thirty-Six Postage Stamps because i love it when books analyze history through an unconventional lens like that

        • and here’s all the climate change books. my suggested permutations:

          • if you’re a pyromaniac, the path of Fire in Paradise, Paradise, Megafire, Firestorm, and The Pyrocene should satisfy that itch.
          • the doomer trifecta is probably Fire and Flood, Losing Earth, and Nomad Century so if you want to know how badly we fucked this one up they go into that quite intimately
          • wonks will probably enjoy Nomad Century, The Best of Times, The Worst of Times, and California Burning as they deal with policy and policy prescriptions in decent droves
          • people looking for something less emotionally devastating should read the optimistic chapters of The Best of Times, The Worst of Times (it is structured to alternate pessimism/optimism chapters) and Choked (which has a generally positive outlook)
          • Extreme Cities is a Verso book, and so is probably the most socialist-oriented of these
          • if you want to be emotionally devastated on a personal level: read the two Paradise books (ideally back-to-back) or one of them and The End of Ice

          ordered by year

          • Extreme Cities: Climate Chaos and the Urban Future by Ashley Dawson (2016)
          • The Water Will Come: Rising Seas, Sinking Cities, and the Remaking of the Civilized World by Jeff Goodell (2017)
          • Firestorm: How Wildfire Will Shape Our Future by Edward Struzik (2017)
          • Megafire: The Race to Extinguish a Deadly Epidemic of Flame by Michael Kodas (2017)
          • Choked: Life and Breath in the Age of Air Pollution by Beth Gardiner (2019)
          • The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption by Dahr Jamail (2020)
          • The Best of Times, The Worst of Times: Futures from the Frontiers of Climate Science by Paul Behrens (2020)
          • Losing Earth: A Recent History by Nathaniel Rich (2021)
          • The Pyrocene: How We Created an Age of Fire, and What Happens Next by Stephen J. Pyne (2021)
          • Fire and Flood: A People’s History of Climate Change, From 1979 to the Present by Eugene Linden (2022)
          • Nomad Century: How Climate Migration Will Reshape Our World by Gaia Vince (2022)
          • The Great Displacement: Climate Change and the Next American Migration by Jake Bittle (2023)

          California specific appendix

          • Fire in Paradise: An American Tragedy by Alastair Gee and Dani Anguiano (2020)
          • Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire by Lizzie Johnson (2021)
          • California Burning: The Fall of Pacific Gas and Electric–and What It Means for America’s Power Grid by Katherine Blunt (2022)
  • Hey all! never been much of a poster, so I’m hesitant to put down too much of myself to start out. I’ve been passively invested in FOSS communities and technologies for a while, and curious about decentralized, federated services like mastodon for as long as I’ve known about them, but mastodon is too busy for me so I’m glad I’ve found myself here :3

I don’t expect to be too proactive in the community, but when I do engage, I’ll do my best to respond when responded to. The small community aspect, like the forum days of old others have mentioned in this thread, is compelling to me and I want to be true to it!

Call me wintermute, or winter im happy to respond to either :) Maybe I’ll follow up with interests, pronouns if I warm up to putting myself out there, or maybe you’ll just have to get to know me by the topics I can’t help but weigh in on ;v

  • hello, everyone!

like many, i’m a soon-to-be former redditor (as was a Digger before that). I’m a freelance designer living in Brooklyn, nyc. i like star trek, star wars, and most other sci-fi. I’m also an LGBTQ+ activist and have been fighting for LGBTQ+ equality for over 25 years. Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

I’m Hyperz and I come from the land of waffles, chocolate, fries and beer (Belgium). Was a reader of Reddit for about 15 years and a member for about 11 of those years. Before that I used to be very active on some niche forums until Reddit went Pac-Man on traditional forums. With the way Reddit was going the last few years, and especially now with the incoming API changes, I’ve decided I don’t want to support that anti-user platform anymore. I’m glad I found out about Lemmy (can’t believe I hadn’t heard of it before!) because not only does it look like a viable alternative to Reddit, it also brings back some of the aspects I’ve been missing from the old forum days.

  • Another Reddit migrator here. I’m 25, trans nb. I’m an artist, and my hobbies include film, books, games and anime. More specifically I love horror movies/books and I play loads of things from Splatoon to Minecraft to Dwarf Fortress. Glad to be here :)

  • leetnewb, new as of today 6/1/23. Long-time follower of the open source Lemmy project. Redditor of ~13 years and forum person for many year prior. Have had the hope that communities would eventually migrate to platforms such as this. Interests are pretty mundane: gardening, tennis, some tech and hobby programming. Usually more interested in reading than commenting.

  • Hi everyone, I’m big_tabb! Like several other commenters here, I’m a Reddit user who is dissatisfied with their current policies and am looking to explore the federated space more. I find myself missing the smaller-forum feel more and more and am hoping Beehaw scratches that itch.

I am a backend developer by trade and am passionate about all things programming, gaming, and tech in general (especially if that tech is open source.) I’m also a pretty big reader, mainly sci-fi and fantasy. On the more personal side, I am in my late twenties, pronouns he/him. In a few months I will be becoming a Dad for the first time so that is the main focus of my life right now; when not with family or working, at the moment you can mainly catch me playing Tears of the Kingdom.

Feel free to reach out and chat - looking forward to getting to know this space and you all!

    • (retyping this comment because I think the server ate it)

What kind of backend work do you do? I’m a dotnet developer myself, working in C#

Also a gamer and tech interested, in my early 30s with an 18 month old, so we at least have a bit in common, haha

      • Seems we have even more in common! I primarily write C# too (mostly asp.net core), working in the financial industry right now. At the moment I’m working on bringing most of our workers and messaging structure to the Cloud, lots of cool stuff but can be full of roadblocks lol. What do you find yourself working on? My wife is just entering month 8 of her pregnancy - I’m sure you know the combination of excitement and terror I’m feeling knowing it’s almost time!

        • I’m working in a sector that I guess would be under the HR software umbrella, where I’m primarily an API developer that focuses on integrations, as well as expanding functionality in the API. It used to be a pretty small shop, so I had a number of roles, haha. These days its more about making sure our new parent company’s integration works with our software as cleanly as possible.

We had a bit of a skip in pregnancy progress from right about where you are, to full parenthood. Baby was born at 31w1d gestational age, so it was a whirlwind to say the least. Ultimately everything ended up alright, so thankful for that. That’s not to say there wasn’t a combo of excitement and terror, just a little more rushed, is all, haha.

  • Hi everyone!!

As with 99% of those here in this thread, a reddit user and so unenthused about the idea of not being able to choose my app to moderate or scroll. I’ve finally made the jump. My friends all think I am nuts, but I’m set on it. I take privacy and FOSS seriously!

I’ve been on Mastodon twice before, but this time I think I’m making it official, and loving how Lemmy is so far <3

I’m a Linux enthusiast, gamer (just got a Steam Deck! - BoTW via CEMU as Linkle, Stray and now starting the download for Skyrim, hoping that I can mod the game? The only YT video I checked out said that I need it installed on the SSD to work, which is hard since I have the 64gb version), I live for summer. Coffee is my reason for living.

Honestly joining up here feels as good as it did when I ditched the typical socials.

Can’t wait to get to know you all!

  • @alyaza Hi there. I am also another person seeking an alternative to Reddit. I had been looking at the Fediverse from a distance for a bit but never jumped on board until now. The thought of a megacorporation ruining my user experience for the sake of their pocketbooks was enough for me.
I’m still fumbling around trying to figure things out but I’m having a good time so far.
I look forward to this little digital adventure.

  • Hello everyone! I’m Cave, any pronouns (really). I’m a former redditor of 6~ years and have never been an active poster, but I plan on changing that now with a smaller community. I’m a big fan of open source and free software, but I also really like sewing, gaming (mainly idle games and metroidvanias), hiking, cooking, and gardening. I also like to read.

Hi all, I’m jdw, yet another Reddit refugee. After being on Reddit for 13 years (and being a Gold subscriber for the last ten of those), I’ve finally had enough of it, and they’ve showed their colours only too well by their actions towards third party clients. I’ve set up a monthly sub with OpenCollective instead!

I’m more of a reader than a poster, but I occasionally comment on things.
