originally found out about it via this post: https://feddit.de/post/736545 and i’m considering to subscribe.

But i’d like to hear some other experiences first. Also, because i can’t watch any video without being subscribed.

  • Most of the content is available on Youtube, but many creators have some extra videos and/or release videos days to a week earlier on Nebula. The majority of the content is video essay style videos and educational stuff, if that isn’t your speed it might not be for you.

The app is easy to use and allows for downloading videos for offline playback. It also doesn’t have any pre/mid roll ads, and many creators don’t include baked in sponsor spots either.

The biggest drawback in my opinion is that they don’t support comments.

I’ve been really happy with it, see if you can get the nebula/curiosity stream bundle advertised by lots of different creators. For something like $20/yr it’s great value and also helps provide a bit of less variable income for the creators that use it!

  • I am a Nebula subscriber, and highly recommend it. 90% of the stuff that’s on Nebula is also on Youtube, but nebula doesn’t have the ads. There’s a bunch of creators who post Nebula first, an there’s a number of “Nebula Exclusives”, but by and by, if you look at who the creators are on Nebula (which you can do without signing in by following this link you’ll see names that you recognise, or can look up on YouTube to get an idea of what they are like. It does mostly focus on educational and scientific content, as far as I can tell. The exclusives are more content from the same creators.

I wouldn’t categorise Nebula as specifically more queer positive. It doesn’t have comments, which helps reduce the number of trolls, and a number of the creators are openly queer, the same way they are on YouTube. I suspect they have an internal code of conduct that specifically prohibits homophobia and transphobia, but if they have it’s not widely advertised.

You may have the impression it’s queer positive because recently Abigail Thorn put up a recording of their play The Prince on Nebula, and that has been widely publicised. I have watched it, and enjoyed it.

As an aside, Nebula’s main comments are on r/nebula. I wonder if they’re considering setting up a lemmy instance themselves.

  • 99% of Nebula videos are also on Youtube, but on Youtube they have ads / sponsored segments and don’t give as much money to the creators.

The remaining 1% is really cool original content, but personally I mostly use Nebula to avoid having to open Youtube when a creator I like posts a new video. Don’t expect a complately different experience or type of content in there, just a nicer interface & excellent content curation that allows you to avoid the Youtube algorithm inferno.

  • Subscribed for two years now. I really like it!

    • Nice nerdy content
    • No ads
    • No comment hellhole

And if you use one of the many promo codes from creators you get it for 15$ or so for a whole year. Give it a try for a month and check for yourself!

  • I use it. Have had a subscription for a few years as part of a CuriosityStream bundle. There’s quite a few creators on there I enjoy and will usually watch through Nebula rather than YouTube as I know it supports them more directly. Also enjoyed just browsing and have found some really good content that way from people I didn’t previously know about from YouTube.

It’s definitely far more select with its creators than YouTube, and I don’t see it as a replacement for it, but depending on someone’s financial situation, I think giving it a go for a month if you’re unsure is probably worth a shot.

      • Honestly I probably don’t make use the other stuff that comes in the bundle as much as I should, mostly just Nebula and sometimes CuriosityStream. I pay half the normal price, so less than $30 annually at the moment, as got it when they were doing a deal. For the discounted price I consider it worth it for Nebula alone though.

      • You can see what videos are available on their website without logging in, so you can get an idea of the content from the creators and titles. You can watch most of the same videos with ads by looking up the creators on YouTube to see if you like them before committing to a Nebula subscription. If you do opt to get Nebula and you also like documentaries, I recommend getting it through the CuriosityStream bundle which is about the same price annually, but gives access to more content.

  • I don’t know if Nebula is explicitly queer positive or there’s just less people, thus less jerks. My family signed up after watching a lot of creators on YT recommend it. So basically, we’re watching largely the same content but the creators get more money, we don’t have to sit through sponsored ads and we don’t have to sift through a bunch of terrible algorithm-based recommendations to get to the content we want to see.

I do wish it were easier to search for new content.

We did the bundle with curiosity stream and my kid loves a lot of those videos, too. It’s been worth it for us.

  • I use it and just want to mirror what other people said. It’s like of like subbing to patreon but for a bunch of creators at once. And most of the content is available on youtube anyway but it’s nice to watch it without ads and sometimes extra content

  • I like nebula! I’d give it a go if YouTube isn’t really doing it for you

Although, I would try to find some YouTube video with a nebula discount referral code. They’re everywhere. It’s cheap as it is, but getting a better deal is never a bad thing.
