dog ( @hellothisisdog@yiffit.net ) 97•2 years agohe pleaded not guilty. and his lawyer said this is “an attack on america”.
'cause he had boxes of papers he wasn’t supposed to have, that this is an attack on america? yeah, okay 🙄
squid010 ( @squid010@beehaw.org ) 30•2 years agoThis is gonna be wild… the feds hardly ever lose.
With that, I’m very curious to see the fallout should he be convicted.
PrettyFlyForAFatGuy ( @PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@beehaw.org ) 20•2 years agoi’m a little worried some of his cultists may find their way onto the jury and block a conviction
Spitfire ( @Spitfire@pawb.social ) 12•2 years agoAll it takes is one. They’ll refuse to consider anything other than not guilty.
tate ( @tate@lemmy.sdf.org ) 20•2 years agothe rest of the jury can ask the judge to remove one who is not deliberating in good faith
That’s reassuring.
🐝🇭🇪🅻🅻🇪🇧🅴🆁🇹🐝 ( @Hellebert@beehaw.org ) 9•2 years agoOh man they’re probably all having wet dreams over being “the hero that saves America” or something right now.
reverendsteveii ( @reverendsteveii@beehaw.org ) 14•2 years agothey have him on tape showing people documents that he says are classified and that he also knows that he could have declassified them while in office but that he hasn’t.
cptnflinty ( @cptnflinty@lemmy.nz ) 6•2 years agoYeah he’s so fucked. Caught red handed worse than Nixon.
dog ( @hellothisisdog@yiffit.net ) 5•2 years agoi am not excited to see the fallout, especially right before i am about to move out of a red state 🙃
squid010 ( @squid010@beehaw.org ) 4•2 years agoYeah! I chose my words carefully. I’m curious, not necessarily excited!
I’m unfortunately stuck in a red state, so I feel you there.

dog ( @hellothisisdog@yiffit.net ) 5•2 years agohere you go 💙
Spitfire ( @Spitfire@pawb.social ) 19•2 years agoI work with many people who are so upset over this, calling it injustice and how horrible that we choose to prosecute Trump when we should instead be jailing Hillary, Harris, and Biden.
I bite my tongue and don’t say anything but it’s so frustrating.
awake01 ( @awake01@lemmy.world ) 16•2 years agoAs far as Hillary goes I am not sure why Trump’s DoJ didn’t hand down an indictment if it had evidence that she ultimately committed a crime? I guess the same is true for Hunter.
GodOfSnails ( @GodOfSnails@beehaw.org ) 10•2 years agoTo my knowledge and I am prefacing this with I could be wrong. In order to charge Hillary for the email incident they would have had to prove either Intent or Gross negligence and when it came down to Hillary I dont think the Doj had anything along the lines of these two factors, whereas trump and they even qoute him, hes talking about how the information is still classified but yada yada this happened, that fills the intent part and then for the gross negligence part they talk about how they found the boxes of files just strewn about everywhere in the club.
Feel free to correct me, this is just my understanding.
dog ( @hellothisisdog@yiffit.net ) 7•2 years agooh yeah! thank you for saying that :) trump had the doj under his control and still didn’t have enough evidence to indict her. i would think that would shut up the “jail hillary and joe” crowd, but i guess they have super short term memory
I probably shouldn’t, but I let those people know what I think. If they want to bring it up, they can hear what I have to say about it too.
dog ( @hellothisisdog@yiffit.net ) 3•2 years agosame here. i’m all for treating everyone as equal, but i’m pretty sure nothing new came up after hillary was already investigated and iirc biden was slapped on the wrist for not returning some documents. but hey, you know, one box is the same as rooms full of boxes, apparently
Spitfire ( @Spitfire@pawb.social ) 5•2 years agoThe difference seems to me, as far as I know (please correct me if I have missed something) is that Biden and related parties cooperated with getting the documents returned while Trump hid and tried to erase evidence that he had them. And I believe that some have yet to be found, potentially sold off.
dog ( @hellothisisdog@yiffit.net ) 3•2 years agonoice 👌 and i know the news was telling me today, too, that the doj gave trump a chance to return all his documents earlier this year, and he returned, they said, like one box. way to be 👍 what did he think was gonna happen? they just never find the boxes that have become fixtures of his house?
bouncing ( @bouncing@partizle.com ) 17•2 years agohis lawyer said this is “an attack on america”.
I’m wondering if the lawyers who quit did so because they were too embarrassed to say shit like that in court, despite a certain client’s demands.
dog ( @hellothisisdog@yiffit.net ) 13•2 years agothe lawyers that quit are lawyers who don’t want to perjure themselves, probably 🙃
He’s just a walking blizzard of dishonesty.
TheRoxyWC2 ( @TheRoxyWC2@lemmy.world ) 92•2 years agoExcellent. May his orange jumpsuit soon follow.
SaltySalamander ( @SaltySalamander@lemmy.world ) 59•2 years agoI’m just sad that federal mugshots aren’t made public.
Perdendosi ( @Perdendosi@lemmy.world ) 22•2 years agoNo mugshot “because the president is recognizable” EDIT: “Trump is easily recognizable” I guess that’s a thing, though I’ve never heard of it being used before. EDIT, I didn’t quote it right, and @Powderhorn@beehaw.org caught me :)
Pete Hahnloser ( @Powderhorn@beehaw.org ) 17•2 years agoThe president certainly is recognizable … thing is, he’s a dead ringer for Joe Biden.
andrew ( @andrew@radiation.party ) 6•2 years agoThe resemblance between the current president and Joe Biden is uncanny, to say the least.
KilgoreTrout ( @KilgoreTrout@beehaw.org ) English3•2 years agoPresidents keep their title so he’s still “President Trump”. I hope his prison guards will respect that.
AndrewOz ( @AndrewOz@beehaw.org ) 2•2 years agoHe is shaped like William Taft.
wildbus8979 ( @wildbus8979@sh.itjust.works ) 1•2 years agoI thought he looked more like JFK Jr 🤔
Pete Hahnloser ( @Powderhorn@beehaw.org ) 7•2 years agoNo worries! I’d just like to keep the referring to Trump as “the president” to his spin team. They never call him “the former president” for a host of reasons, but that doesn’t mean reasonable people should follow suit.
ipkpjersi ( @ipkpjersi@lemmy.one ) 2•2 years agoAlso they aren’t gonna handcuff him because they don’t want him to look guilty or something like that.
bufordt ( @bufordt@beehaw.org ) 6•2 years agoHis skin is already orange, don’t you think his wardrobe should match it?
FapFlop ( @FapFlop@discuss.tchncs.de ) English3•2 years agoIt’s active camo. Just implemented incorrectly.
metaltoilet ( @metaltoilet@beehaw.org ) 59•2 years agoThis title is a little misleading. No, Trump has not been arrested but he did appear in court. He is not in any form of jail (yet).
Pigeon ( @Lowbird@beehaw.org ) 41•2 years agoWe need one of those mod appliable (or vote-appliable?) “Misleading title” or “headline altered” tags maybe
The headline was not altered.
Cass.Forest ( @cityboundforest@beehaw.org ) 4•2 years agoThat does make me wonder if there’s an option in Lemmy to add tags to posts.
collegefurtrader ( @collegefurtrader@discuss.tchncs.de ) 55•2 years agothe Justice Department recommended the defendants be released with no financial or special conditions as they aren’t a “flight risk.”
Being “arrested” is not the way I remember it
R0cket_M00se ( @c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world ) 3•2 years agoHeadline in five days:
“We were wrong” says justice department when asked about Trump fleeing to Russia for diplomatic protection.
Revan343 ( @Revan343@lemmy.ca ) 2•2 years agoHave you tried being rich?
collegefurtrader ( @collegefurtrader@discuss.tchncs.de ) 2•2 years agoI’m trying every day
liontigerwings ( @liontigerwings@sh.itjust.works ) 53•2 years agoBiden returned the documents before they even know they were gone and he was the one who told them he had them. Trump refused to return the documents when they were requested back and he is caught on tape admitting to knowing he wasn’t supposed to have them. Also he asked his lawyers to destroy evidence.
Huge difference between a crime with someone cooperating and someone who tries to destroy evidence. Also the content of trump’s documents seem like they’re higher level and more highly classified.
cabbagee ( @cabbagee@sopuli.xyz ) 47•2 years agoAP news says Trump will be released without bond
Trump will be released without having to pay a bond. He will not have to surrender his passport or restrict his personal travel.
dog ( @hellothisisdog@yiffit.net ) 21•2 years agothat is so infuriating to me. no one should be above the law; trump and his cronies say the same thing. with so many americans getting profiled and wrongfully arrested and sentenced this makes me beyond angry
Domiku ( @Domiku@beehaw.org ) 21•2 years agoMeanwhile, someone allegedly steals a backpack in NYC and languishes in jail for years, then dies without ever having their trial.
018118055 ( @018118055@sopuli.xyz ) 16•2 years agoI hope he flees to Russia
SquishyPandaDev ( @SquishyPandaDev@yiffit.net ) 9•2 years agoHe is too stupid to flee. I bet his brain broke when he pleaded not guilty and the charges weren’t immediately dropped. He thinks he is going to get out of this like all the other times he faced legal troubles
P1r4nha ( @P1r4nha@feddit.de ) 7•2 years agoThat would be hilarious.
MachineTeaching ( @MachineTeaching@feddit.de ) 10•2 years agoWell tbh both his ego and his bank account command him to try to run for president again so I don’t see him fleeing.
mitch ( @msprout@beehaw.org ) 6•2 years agoAs strange as it sounds, he is legally able to do both of those while in exile.
Bautznersenf ( @Bautznersenf@feddit.de ) 4•2 years agoImagine the secret service making themselves comfortable in the Kremlin.
MonkeyFightinSnakes ( @MonkeyFightinSnakes@vlemmy.net ) 6•2 years agoClearly getting special treatment but the maga crowd will claim it’s a targeted attack.
little_hoarse ( @little_hoarse@sh.itjust.works ) 2•2 years agoOf course!
Jenga ( @Jenga@beehaw.org ) 40•2 years agoSo much unprecedented stuff has happened since his term, but I don’t think anyone was ever confident he would actually stand trial for a federal jury.
Bautznersenf ( @Bautznersenf@feddit.de ) 4•2 years agoHe flew too close to the sun. He could have gotten away with so much shit, but he just can’t help himself and doesn’t know any boundaries.
Briongloid ( @briongloid@aussie.zone ) 35•2 years agoI guess it’s already happened, but this time seems like a bigger deal.
Perdendosi ( @Perdendosi@lemmy.world ) 29•2 years agoThis is a bigger deal. These federal charges are way more serious than what he’s facing in New York.
ImplyingImplications ( @ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca ) 24•2 years agoThis is a bigger deal. Telling authorities you don’t have top secret classified documents at your residence and allowing them to search certain rooms and then having them come back later with a warrant and finding them hidden in a bathroom (that they weren’t allowed into originally) is really really bad.
It makes his other charge of using campaign donations for personal reasons look like jaywalking.
Perdendosi ( @Perdendosi@lemmy.world ) 16•2 years agoHe was processed in New York, too. I’m going to guess that he’s going to go through this process at least once more (in Georgia). I don’t think he’ll need to be fingerprinted and processed again if there are other federal charges while these are pending, but charges related to Jan. 6 might change his bail or conditions of release.
squid010 ( @squid010@beehaw.org ) 14•2 years agoThis is the biggest deal, imo. Having nuclear secrets, audio of him admitting he was breaking the law - and the public knowing about that, to me says they have much more ammo they’ll be bringing to light in trial. I think he’s screwed. I don’t want to hold my breath, but this seems like it will really take him down.

collegefurtrader ( @collegefurtrader@discuss.tchncs.de ) 1•2 years agoIs there no “op” tag on lemmy?
Lurco de Candacia ( @LurkerCandado@programming.dev ) 25•2 years agoA little on a tangent here but…
I’m guessing News and WorldNews will, again and like in Reddit, be actually USANews. Let’s see what the fediverse and instances do bring to that issue.
AbidanYre ( @AbidanYre@beehaw.org ) 14•2 years agoThat would probably depend on which instance you’re using.
Unless I’m misunderstanding how this all works.
Admiral Patrick ( @ptz@dubvee.org ) 5•2 years agoThat’s my understanding. The only challenge is searching for news communities but not knowing where the instance is geographically.
I’m sure it will sort itself out over time.
Bautznersenf ( @Bautznersenf@feddit.de ) 5•2 years agoThe fact is that the whole world is addicted to US news and everyone wants to know what happens to Trump. Like it or not, the US is still the country that everyone else looks to, even if it’s just to shit on it.
YoTcA ( @YoTcA@feddit.de ) 2•2 years agoI think at the moment it really depends on what posts people will submit to this community. There are still so few posts, that they will not get buried, like on Reddit.

Fucker needs to rot in prison!
HikerAdam ( @HikerAdam@sh.itjust.works ) 18•2 years agoJustice.

Nobody is above the law.
EnigmaNL ( @EnigmaNL@feddit.nl ) 17•2 years agoLock him up!
axibzllmbo ( @axibzllmbo@beehaw.org ) 13•2 years agoI don’t want to get my hopes up, but this feels very “end of the line” for him.
Man I hope. Otherwise, I’ll have no faith left in this country.
Demonmariner ( @demonmariner@lemmy.one ) 5•2 years agoI hope so too, but even if he does go to prison, remember, Hitler did too. And then became Chancellor of Germany.
I’m afraid we will be dealing with Trump until he dies peacefully of old age.
little_hoarse ( @little_hoarse@sh.itjust.works ) 4•2 years agohe’ll get out of it one way or another. i don’t even know how they’re letting this guy declare a run for presidency
sbr32 ( @sbr32@lemmy.fmhy.ml ) 5•2 years agoThere are only 3 requirements for being/ running for POTUS:
Natural born citizen 35 years old 14 year residency in the US
In theory he could be found guilty, still elected and serve from a federal jail cell.
little_hoarse ( @little_hoarse@sh.itjust.works ) 1•2 years agoFor some reason I was under the impression they couldn’t be convicted of a crime
sexy_peach ( @sexy_peach@feddit.de ) English12•2 years agoI like everything that inconveniences him, even though I am not entirely sure they will get him this time. He’s kinda rich after all and that’s how it is.
Zymi ( @Zymii@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English15•2 years agoBeing rich isn’t as much of a defense when you’ve pissed off the DoD and there’s recorded audio of you admitting you have illegally held nuclear secrets after lying and saying you didn’t.
I get the worry though.
guildz ( @guildz@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) English10•2 years agoPersonally, I think the CIA is also pissed at him after mysteriously losing tons of informants in 2020 and 2021. There are probably papers that trump mishandled that are so classified that they can’t be used in the indictment, cause that would be releasing them. I do not like either the DOD or CIA, but if there are two groups in this entire world who I would not want to piss off, its DOD and the CIA.
Pagliacci ( @Pagliacci@lemmy.ml ) English7•2 years agoIt also doesn’t get you off when you don’t pay your lawyers, for whatever reason.
Bautznersenf ( @Bautznersenf@feddit.de ) English2•2 years agoIt’s hard to believe that after all this time he’ll actually go down, but there’s no way the prosecution didn’t pull overtime to make doubly sure that this is going to stick.
