I’m really excited for this. I’m sure at first it will be selling for a price way more expensive than normal chicken, but I hope in the long run, it’ll be able to make it so people can get meat for really cheap. And just think, you can get the perfect cut with no gristle or fat every time! I hope this succeeds and becomes common enough I can get it in my grocery store.

I hadn’t even thought about the possibility of making better cuts of meat.

Wow, it’s finally approved. I feel like I’ve been hearing about lab-grown meat forever and I wasn’t sure it would ever come to market. Then in the meantime Beyond/Impossible came onto the scene with their technology. To be honest their products are such close imitations of meat, I wonder how much better this lab grown meat could be. I also wonder about the cost.

I’m wondering if they’ve solved the whole thing with cultured meat requiring fetal bovine serum yet? From what I understand it can’t really become affordable or any more ethical than regular meat unless that has been solved.

2 yo article about chicken lab-meat in Singapore https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/dec/02/no-kill-lab-grown-meat-to-go-on-sale-for-first-time

They mention that their production line uses fetal bovine serum (at the time) but that their next one wouldn’t, but it just wasn’t complete for the launch.

Apparently they would use a plant based alternative, but I haven’t been able to find an article (not behind a paywall) on that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a solved problem, imo they wouldn’t be able to use fetal bovine serum in large quantities anyway due to it’s price.
