The U.K. Government Is Very Close To Eroding Encryption Worldwide

The U.K. Parliament is pushing ahead with a sprawling internet regulation bill that will, among other things, undermine the privacy of people around the world. The Online Safety Bill, now at the final stage before passage in the House of Lords, gives the British government the ability to force backdoors into messaging services, which will destroy end-to-end encryption. No amendments have been accepted that would mitigate the bill’s most dangerous elements. If it passes, the Online Safety Bill will be a huge step backwards for global privacy, and democracy itself.

    Well done us!

It just feels like the Tories are trying to wreck enough stuff to keep their corporate overlords happy, so they can get a cushy job afterwards.

I genuinely believe they’re beyond giving a shit at this point. They know their cards are marked and it’s just like they’re trolling everyone at this point while they wait to get booted out

From a government that spends all its time doing deals on Whatsapp, it now wants to stop anyone else having privacy. you couldn’t make this shit up.

Other governments will see that it’s possible and copy them. Some are well on the way already. In the USA, the “Stop CSAM Act” proposes to make encryption illegal:

What a disgrace. I will definitely be following the EFF’s advice and sending a complaint to the House of Lords to reconsider, for what little difference that could make.

It’s in the article and mentioned by Liam below - send a strongly worded message to the House of Lords.

It also can’t hurt to contact your MP.

There may also be demonstrations against this.

Unfortunately, the Tories have such a massive majority they can steamroller most things through.

Medium to long term the best thing we can all do is vote and vote tactically.

True point. I wrongly worded it. But let’s just be honest. This proposal is a complete garbage.

That’s a complete garbage proposal, as well. French people have sth similar that when you use encrypted messaging service, it can be used as an evidence that you committed crime or sth similar to it. I don’t remember exactly how it was
