Semi-Hemi-Demigod ( @Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social ) 27•2 years agoI will face Jod and walk backward into hell before I say “jiff”
MrZigZag ( @MrZigZag@kbin.social ) 5•2 years agoClearly you’re not a choosy mom.
Dandroid ( @dandroid@dandroid.app ) 2•2 years agoHow do you say gin or giraffe? Or literally the letter G?
Shaikan ( @Shaikan@programming.dev ) 2•2 years agoI pronounce them like Gin and Giraffe
DreadPirateShawn ( @DreadPirateShawn@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) 16•2 years agoLike the G in “gigantic”.
And “gigolo.”
Nyla Smokeyface ( @Nyla_Smokeyface@beehaw.org ) 14•2 years agoI was devastated to learn the creators intended it to be pronounced “jif” like the peanut butter brand
Surface_Detail ( @Surface_Detail@lemmy.ml ) 13•2 years agoYeah, because it’s a jraphical interface format.
kittenspronkles ( @kittenspronkles@lemmy.ml ) 22•2 years agoSo do you say j-feg? Because the p stands for photographic
pythonoob ( @pythonoob@programming.dev ) 8•2 years agoOne of the common nonsensical arguments heard. What’s the next one?
KIM_JONG_JUICEBOX ( @KIM_JONG_JUICEBOX@lemmy.ml ) 3•2 years agoGiraffical
SeedyOne ( @SeedyOne@lemmy.ca ) 12•2 years agoOne of the few times I don’t care what the creator says, he was wrong.
MeetInPotatoes ( @MeetInPotatoes@lemmy.ml ) English9•2 years agoAnd yet your mind knows it’s not possible for him to be wrong since he named it.
Taako_Tuesday ( @Taako_Tuesday@lemmy.ca ) 5•2 years agoMe too. I feel like no one pronounced it jif before they said that, and now we have to have an eternal debate over it
snowe ( @snowe@programming.dev ) 6•2 years agoThat’s literally how every programmer pronounced it before it became an Internet sensation. It had a marketing campaign to “sell” the format because that’s how new standards were created initially. They explicitly chose to name it after the peanut butter because it allowed them to give it a catchy phrase to sell it even better “choosy developers choose gif”.
Dandroid ( @dandroid@dandroid.app ) 1•2 years agoI say dʒɪf, but the way the person who invented it wants you to say it is a really dumb basis for how something is pronounced, imo.
Pixelphoria ( @Pixelphoria@lemmy.ml ) 14•2 years agoJraphic interface format really sounds right /s

iamak ( @iamak@infosec.pub ) 11•2 years agoWhy do people have to pronounced it in any way? Why not say G-I-F? I’ve been saying it like that since before I knew about the huge debate💀
snowe ( @snowe@programming.dev ) 8•2 years agoCuz the devs explicitly named it after the peanut butter and even gave it a catchphrase to make sure you pronounced it correctly. It was a marketing campaign. “Choosy developers choose gif”.
seitanic ( @seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org ) 7•2 years agoHow do you pronounce JIF, then? (That’s the JPEG Interchange Format.)
snowe ( @snowe@programming.dev ) 5•2 years agoThe same way? There’s thousands of words in the English language with the same pronunciation and different spellings. This isn’t the dunk you think it is.
Besides, gif existed first. If JIF wanted to use the name without confusion maybe they should have come out first (missed it by half a decade) or come up with a catchy phrase.
pythonoob ( @pythonoob@programming.dev ) 4•2 years agoGif, clearly.
- argv_minus_one ( @argv_minus_one@beehaw.org ) 1•2 years ago
That’s JPEG File Interchange Format.
seitanic ( @seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org ) 3•2 years agoRight there in the first paragraph, it says
The base specifications for a JPEG container format are defined in Annex B of the JPEG standard, known as JPEG Interchange Format (JIF).

Carlos Solís ( @csolisr@communities.azkware.net ) 7•2 years agoI take the third route and pronounce it Heef, as in Spanish
1337 ( @1337admin@1337lemmy.com ) 7•2 years agoPronounced it as a soft g in my head the first time I read it, and years later the creator said it was meant to be a soft g, so I feel validated.
When you create an image format, name it whatever you want and if it’s any good and I use it, I’ll call it what you want

Hard G. It’s “Graphics Interchange Format”, not “Jraphics Interchange Format”.
cordlesslamp ( @cordlesslamp@lemmy.today ) 5•2 years agoTry to pronounce the letter G. What does it sound like? Hard or soft G?
Now, while pronouncing “G”, close your lips to make the sound “G-if”.
There you have it, how to pronounce “Gif”.
Ps: honestly, That just popped up in my head a moment ago and I’m just trying to troll, wholeheartedly I believe it is hard-G as in Graphics.
geissi ( @geissi@feddit.de ) English3•2 years agoTry to pronounce the letter G. What does it sound like? Hard or soft G?
According to wikipedia the phonetic usage includes:
[g] [d͡ʒ] [ʒ] [ŋ] [j] [ɣ~ʝ] [x~χ] [d͡z] [ɟ] [k] [ɠ] [ɢ] /dʒiː/For English pronunciation it lists:
/dʒ/ /ɡ/ /ʒ/ and silent
Squids ( @Squids@sopuli.xyz ) English3•2 years agoDoes that mean you also pronounce scuba sku•ba instead of skoo•bah? Because that U stands for Underwater not OOnderwater. And what about Jpeg? Shouldn’t it be Jeg because the P in photographic is silent.
- AnarchoYeasty ( @AnarchoYeasty@beehaw.org ) English3•2 years ago
Or jfeg because photography has an f sound.
It’s soft g gif. Because the original joke was choosy moms choose jif, and choosy web developers choose gif.
terminhell ( @terminhell@lemmy.dbzer0.com ) 4•2 years ago.jeff
Dandroid ( @dandroid@dandroid.app ) 7•2 years agoI have a friend named Geoff who says gif with a hard G. I like to pronounce his name with a hard G after that. Geff.
akari ( @akariii@lemmy.blahaj.zone ) 4•2 years agothe correct answer is hard-g soft-g ee ef ef: ggi F.F.
