• Barbara is right though, fireworks are a stupid tradition that can be better served with drone light shows or projection displays. They look way cooler, better for the environment, and don’t cause unnecessary stress for dogs and war survivors (soliders or civilians can suffer PTSD from war).

    Fuck fireworks.

    • Served way better depends on what you’re goal is. For some people, the loud bang is the whole point. We’ve got 2 days a year where we shoot off fireworks, and everyone knows when they are. Only the animals are surprised. If we argue about necessity well just end up in the kind of argument that can logically lead to voluntary extinction. The amount of environmental disruption we consider acceptable is a matter of opinion, but it ain’t ever zero.

This is doesn’t make any sense and the strangest attempt at a red herring I’ve come across on Lemmy, there is no necessity. Period. It’s still Independence Day whether or not you scare pets and veterans. You can celebrate with a BBQ like every other holiday. Basically you typed a lot of words just to say you don’t care how your actions effect others, or that your two seconds of pleasure is worth the well being of animals and neighbors.

Who are you to dictate what is and isn’t appropriate way to celebrate?

Many people are considerate about it as well as take efforts to do it safely.

Yea you can celebrate in other ways, but then again, right back at you.

You ar absolutely right there is no necessity, shit there is no necessity tot he whole fucking holiday.

But if you look into the history of the fourth, you’ll see there are connections, not just tradition either.

I find this ironic because it can easily be reversed. Basically you typed a lot of words just to say you don’t care how or where the fireworks occur, bottom line they are bad

Can you drop the hyperbole and look at it rationally? Why is your stance “fuck all fireworks for the good of everyone”, and not “do it somewhere else”?

          WE CAN ACCOMMODATE BOTH

I am impacted negatively by fireworks but I recognize that isn’t grounds to shout anyone down that isn’t negatively impacted. All I need is it just to not happen near my house. Simple as that

          • Who are you to dictate what is and isn’t appropriate way to celebrate?

            I’m Dee.

Many people are considerate about it as well as take efforts to do it safely.

            That’s good for them.

Yea you can celebrate in other ways, but then again, right back at you.

Ah, the “no u” rebuttal when it doesn’t make contextual sense. A classic.

You ar absolutely right there is no necessity, shit there is no necessity tot he whole fucking holiday.

            Now you’re getting it!

But if you look into the history of the fourth, you’ll see there are connections, not just tradition either.

            Yes.

Because even if they’re done somewhere else it’s still creating needless waste with what’s left behind regardless of location, it’s still releasing unnecessary pollutants into the atmosphere for what? So you can stare for a split second at a big flashy light? Is your life so dull? That’s not even getting into all the fires that are started every year.

            WE CAN ACCOMMODATE BOTH

            No.

I am impacted negatively by fireworks but I recognize that isn’t grounds to shout anyone down that isn’t negatively impacted. All I need is it just to not happen near my house. Simple as that

Everybody is negatively impacted, it’s a dumb reason to produce extra pollutants when the same show could be accomplished by other means mentioned in my original comment. Again, not even touching all the damage to property, the ecosystem and to lives through the fires caused by fireworks every year.

            I repeat, fuck fireworks.

              everyone is negatively impacted x

This is simply untrue and indefensible, but you clearly just want to lift YOUR OPINION to fact status. That’s not how it works.

The world doesn’t exist in black and white, why are you so desperate to paint it as such? You’re tripping over yourself to deliver hyperbole after hyperbole

    • I agree but I don’t.

      “Stupid tradition”

Every fucking tradition is dumb, especially when you’re on the outside looking in.

A better way would be to allow fireworks in certain areas away from residential areas. Almost every place I’ve called home all over the country have followed that, some not as well as others (looking at you, North Carolina… New England and the PNW for life!)

I always had dogs and so in those exceptions in the few years I was in the south I had to hold and pet my dog every 4th as he would shake and be terrified the entire time. Truly awful or being able to make them feel better. Sometimes a drive will be good unless you’re driving by more fireworks lol

That to me is a perfect example of the real issue: in New England where I grew up, you can’t just pop off with fireworks, whereas in the south it’s a free for all in some ways.

Fireworks have been enjoyed globally for many many many years, why not advocate for rules and standards that would ensure it can be enjoyed without affecting others. It can and is done in many places in the US.

Drone light shows are cool but “cooler” is nothing but objective (although it might be true technically, those batteries don’t run that hot!!)

  • At least don’t be the asshole that pops them off on any day that isn’t the holiday in question.

Like, at least on the day of, there’s sort of a tacit understanding for people with PTSD and nervous pets that THIS is the day to be prepared for and get through, so at least people know to be ready for it. Doing it on any other day and surprising them with it is such a self-centered, inconsiderate dickhead move.

Always blows my mind how much we hear red-blooded patriots go on about “the troops,” just to go and celebrate their patriotism by stressing the shit out of all the veterans in their neighborhood.

  • I agree with Barbara. Fireworks started here on Saturday, they were set off again last night, and it’s safe to assume they’ll be used again tonight (and tomorrow). Our dog just has to hide for hours under the blankets because there’s now this need to set them off for multiple days before (and sometimes after) the 4th.
