ursakhiin ( @ursakhiin@beehaw.org ) 20•8 months agoJust think, somewhere in the multiverse is a universe where boomers can’t afford houses because their kids traveled back in time and bought them all up.
interolivary ( @interolivary@beehaw.org ) 15•8 months agoCaptain Buzzkill here, but an infinite number of universes wouldn’t necessarily guarantee that every possible scenario happens.
As an analogy, there’s an infinite amount of integers, but you’re not going to find 1.5 in them.
ExLisper ( @ExLisper@linux.community ) English3•8 months agoI’ve heard it’s just before the last one.
Halosheep ( @Halosheep@lemm.ee ) 2•8 months agoInfinite universes doesn’t define infinite in any real way. You’ve defined infinity as all integers but infinity can be defined to include all rationals as well, which would include 1.5. In an unbounded infinite universes where the universe exists, you should find every possible scenario.
interolivary ( @interolivary@beehaw.org ) 2•8 months agoIt was an analogy for how something infinite doesn’t necessarily contain everything you can think of, not meant to be taken absolutely literally (hence the word “analogy” there). Also I got this from some physicist so I didn’t pull it out of my own butt, I’ll try find a source

ComradeSharkfucker ( @sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml ) 4•8 months agoI specifically meant I’m getting my degree in physics so I can do this
reric88🧩 ( @reric88@beehaw.org ) 1•3 months agoCan you stop by me in 2012 when I bought up a bunch of Bitcoin and tell me not to waste it, hold onto it for a few years because it will make me a millionaire? Thx

Karyoplasma ( @Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de ) 4•8 months agoBackwards time travel is physically impossible. You would need to travel at truly negative speed to achieve it, but the magnitude of speed is always positive.
Chrobin ( @Chrobin@discuss.tchncs.de ) 5•8 months agoCorrection: You’d need to travel with a speed higher than the vacuum speed of light.
Karyoplasma ( @Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de ) 2•8 months agoThinking about it, it’s even more complicated than that. You’re right that a negative speed would not work since the square of a negative number is positive anyway. But a speed higher than c would result in a negative square root, so no real solution. Also, traveling at exactly the speed of light would divide by zero lol
But maybe our formula is wrong. Or it’s just impossible, who knows?
Whoosh material right here.
Edit: Apparently OP is making a joke. Mmmhmm
Karyoplasma ( @Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de ) 1•8 months agoImagine assuming the other party didn’t get the joke in the pic but just chose to ignore it, just so the dumb reddit meme can live on!
