  • I have one with the RK3588 (32GB RAM version), and while it is CERTAINLY not competitive on price/performance, it’s been entirely serviceable for the last year, and I really enjoy it. The trackball is a bit annoying, but not game breaking. I think I found where the issue lies in their firmware, but haven’t had the time or energy to try to fix it. For some reason the polling rate on the trackball movement during scrolling is low enough that it doesn’t register if you move really slowly or only move a little bit, which ends up feeling a bit clunky, but it’s still better than most mice. The boot process takes ~10 seconds for me, but I’m loading NixOS with /boot on an SD card and I have LUKS encryption on my SSD.

  • I dunno about <1% exactly, but I’m for sure a minority, and that is definitely why it’s hard to find stuff. I regularly have conversations in real life where people ask me why I don’t just have a cheap used bike (given my hobbies and political beliefs, it makes sense on some level to ask) and I think I’m just salty after having to explain to people repeatedly that, no, I’m not a fancy-bike guy, I spent the least that I could.

Also, while cheap bikes are a great resource for working class people who fit them, like MinnesotaGoddam@lemmy.world and their need for an expensive bike to fit their disability, I think it’s important to remind people about accessibility and that there are some of us that cannot access these resources. This is not to say that I think OP was being specifically discriminatory, only that if we don’t speak up often about how society does not all bodies into account, people will tend to not think about it in general.

  • I think there are 3 reasonable options (that I’m pursuing currently):

Linux on a phone designed for Android

I’ve tried a few different models of phone. I’m currently running mobile nixos on a OnePlus 6, but waiting on Plasma Mobile to be fully functional. When I last played with it a couple months ago, the virtual keyboard was broken. Nothing else I’ve tried has had all features on the phone work.

A small Linux laptop with a mobile network card

I am trying to set up an MNT Pocket Reform as a phone replacement. The hardware is almost there. The software and firmware have a bit of a ways to go, but it has promise for a subset of people.

    A Linux-first phone-like device

There are some phones that are set up with PostmarketOS or other mobile Linux distributions from the manufacturer, but they right now tend to be really pricey, under-performing, and don’t really have upstream support. The Mecha Comet seems to be another interesting option. I’ve pre-ordered one and I’m excited to see what it’s capable of.
