  • ToneX and Neural Amp Modeler are both in a completely different category from everything else. They’re using a new form of amp modeling that sounds vastly better than the impulse-based modelers of the past. Everyone will switch to this at some point, but those are the only two who have switched to neural network based modeling so far.

NAM is free, but only available as a plug-in. ToneX is available as a plug-in and as an affordable box you can gig with. The only downside is that it only covers the amp and cab, so you’re still going to need your pedalboard for other effects. There’s also no effects loop, but I think it’s fine to apply your post effects after the cab has been applied.

The other downside is that it’s just a box, so you’re going to need speakers for gigging. You may need to plug into a PA or something like that for gigs.

  • Reddit feels like it got angrier over the last couple of years. It became more common for me to get into heated arguments, and the prospect of leaving has made me realize that I don’t think I enjoy Reddit nearly as much as I did a decade ago. I struggle to understand what I’m still getting out of it, to be honest.

I’m especially tired of opening up Apollo and seeing bigotry all over the front page of Reddit. This one has gotten a lot worse in recent years. I’ve specifically chosen a Lemmy instance where that kind of thing isn’t permitted, so I hope that will help.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around how all of this works. It’s not as intuitive, but I’m sure it will make sense in a few days.

  • I think my next indie game is finally taking shape. There’s a lot of work to do, but I’m mostly going to re-use systems I wrote for my last game, so that will save a lot of time. I think my environments look great.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with Midinous which is a generative sequencer. It’s super powerful considering how few concepts there are to learn. It covers a lot of the tricks that I’ve learned from modular synthesis, but in a more approachable way.
