What they are talking about isn’t just federated content, but the grouping and presentation for grouping of that content.
For example, being able to group content from all your subscribed communities for Montreal - that way instead of having a cluttered page that includes those Montreal communities and the rest of your subscriptions, or just one community at a time, you could go to your custom feed of just your Montreal subscriptions.
No, you just need to subscribe to !montreal@lemmy.ca. “Unfortunately” they share the same name, but they are different communities.
Just search for
!montreal@lemmy.ca

You can totally do that already though. I registered with Beehaw and on my main page I have stuff from Beehaw and lemmy.ml
