My grandmother did this and honestly I hated it. I’m cis and still felt so uncomfortable that I asked not to see her. Preschool and up every time she pinched my cheeks and asked if I had girlfriend and it went on and on, do you want to call her, what is she like, I bet you’re so cute.

I did not, in fact, have a girlfriend.

I still remember that grandma. I’m in my 30s and I remember hating that.

Why do people ask that to kids?

I guess because it’s seen as hitting a developmental milestone. Still creepy, though. I’m fortunate in that literally none of my family would ever pry about partners nor kids.

My grandparents have asked that before. Felt strange as one time they asked while I was texting my bf at the time

I think that’s more for the context of the language technically lining up with their sexuality, but it was still uncomfortable.

just that I didn’t have it as bad as others who probably had gender norms pushed on them on top of having grandmas embarrass them publically

it highlights the fact that, because it involved a cis straight context, this was all entirely acceptable to everyone around them.

if this person were trans rather than cis it wouldn’t think it’d have made a big difference considering are implied to have been a child at that point. what would be more revealing context wise would be if those around them were cishet or not, not what the commenter’s identity is
