If anyone still believes in the fairy tale of free speech under capitalism, here is yet another example of why that’s bullshit. Capitalists own everything, they get to set the rules since it’s their private property, and the artists that made it big by being spineless will collaborate with them on closing the mouth of any real artist in their tour because the capitalists have a metric fuckton of money that they will lose out on if they don’t.

I like Linthra which is FOSS and works either with local files or self hosted servers like Jellyfin. I haven’t tried hosting Jellyfin yet so I haven’t tested that, but I really like it’s interface for local files
The thing with that is, it won’t be implemented in a capitalist system where companies will collect most of the data they can so they can sell it to ad companies, business partners and government intelligence who are all willing to pay big bucks for it.
The reason it doesn’t happen is not that there was no engineering architecture design to prevent it, but because no company is going to willingly break the iron law of “profits above all else” that capitalism requires.
The antithesis to all this is free open source alternatives, like Lemmy itself for instance, that don’t collect more data than they need for the simple reason that they are not built with the goal of profit in mind.
So if we want a better web experience in the near future, the best thing you can do is convince people to use FOSS alternatives and create communities here instead of the giants like Reddit, Instagram etc.
Just generally having to do all of the office culture stuff when my type of work (programming) is much better done remotely. Having to wake up much earlier than needed to commute all the way to the office dressed up according to their policy, showing up on time and having to be stuck there the whole day even at the times of the day where there’s not much work to be done, having to deal with certain coworkers that I’d rather avoid, having managers spending more time trying to pressure you than doing any actual work etc.
Work would be so much better if I could just deal with the problems being solved rather than the corporate rituals we all have to take part in.

If we’re talking about freelance scale websites that don’t have that much complexity, as others have said I think AI is a real threat because it’s something that has been done a billion times already. If you really want to stick to this then you need to either be the one taking advantage of AI in order to decrease development time and increase the amount of customers, or you need to be really creative and good at it so that some customers will prefer to pay you to get a quality result instead of AI slop.
Overall I think you’d be better off being a developer in a company instead of freelance nowadays, but that’s my purely vibes based opinion having only worked for companies and never tried freelance
I use both Keychron and Durgod and I’m very happy with both (I wouldn’t call my Durgod colorful since that’s not my taste, but maybe they have options that would be your style)

I wish I could give you a magic trick but the reality is that under capitalism, if you’re not lucky enough to be born into riches or have powerful connections, then you’re pretty much stuck being a wage slave. There is no real alternative to selling someone your labor either for a 9-5 work or multiple part times etc. The only real way out of this is systemic change.
