  • My mother’s internal review went through and she not only is going back on disability, but because the decision to kick her off was a wrong decision, they’re giving her almost a year’s worth of backpay.

    Things this means:

    • We can actually move to a place without a landlord and her son living in it, giving us tenant rights and the ability to communicate with a landlord without worrying we’re going to get evicted
    • We can even afford movers
    • We might not have to go to a food bank anymore
    • We can now budget things instead of being like “okay that goes to rent, that goes to debt, and anything leftover is groceries”
    • I don’t have to hunt for a job while physically and mentally incapable of doing one right now

I’m honestly so thrilled my head hurts.

  • Cardcaptor Sakura!! I found the manga as a kid and became intrigued by it on account of being a comic that Wasn’t obviously for boys. I promptly marathoned all the manga in my tiny little library. Pretear, Wish, some type of ice skating manga…

    But then I googled it.

I was doomed. The entire series of Cardcaptor Sakura was on either YouTube or Veoh. I watched it all. Then I watched Ojamajo Doremi, and then Shugo Chara…

Cardcaptor Sakura got me into anime and manga, but I think out of my beginning anime I wouldn’t rank it too high. It’s nostalgic, it’s cute, I love it, it’s just there’s better ones out there.

  • Oh, that’s actually a thing I’m debating on right now! I bought a Toshiba Satellite L770 the other week for cheap—it’s what, 12 year old? Needs a battery replacement because it does the same thing yours does, and I need to upgrade the ram today to 8gb, but otherwise it’s in pretty damn good condition,

In the end, I think I’d personally buy a replacement third party battery in case the adapter ever gets broken and you want a good hour to transfer any important files over.

  • Thinking of signing my mom and I up for a free debt counseling program and trying to reduce the amount we pay each much. I’m not sure how much it’ll help, but I figure if I get this done out of the way quickly, any damage to our credit might be recovered by the time we have to move.

Job searching still hasn’t been going well. My first ever job interview got rescheduled for Thursday and I feel like I might be getting too burnt out to do it. It was like all my energy was placed into getting ready for it, and now I’m just tired.

On the bright side, I’m getting a not-zero sum of money in the form of government refunds. Might be able to get some glasses and get a week of something like Meals on Wheels so that we can relax for the first time in months, and still have enough to start up a savings fund.

  • I am currently using Linux Mint! I love it, especially as someone who can’t afford fancy things like 70 dollar games or expensive software. I’m enjoying going through recommendation lists to see what I can use in lieu of Windows softwares.

Initially, the gaming was also what made me avoid doing it, but… I can’t play triple AAA games on my laptop anyway because I don’t have a GPU, lmao. The only game I play regularly is on my phone and can be single player.

I don’t play MMO like I did as a teen, so there’s no point in worrying about that either. I have some visual novels I might not be able to play right now, but I play games at such a slow rate that I can just put them on my backlog for when they do work.

Currently, I’m playing through my backlog of older games like Trails in the Sky which work decently. Emulation also works great on it!

  • Currently, I’m enjoying just tinkering with everything and seeing what interests me the most . I’m someone who tried to get into technology a few times over the past years, but only started getting invested in doing things a few months ago when I got into the concept of Personal Knowledge Management and realized there’s soooo many cool things outside of the Google/Windows ecosystems.

My main laptop now has Linux Mint on it and all my software is currently free. I’m thinking of getting into self-hosting webapps—I just managed to install docker, so I’m researching which web apps would be best for my needs.

I bought an old laptop (17 inch and a CD player! The perfect streaming device!) for sixty dollars, that turned out to be upgradeable. So I can replace the battery and ram in it and hopefully it’ll run as smooth as new. After that, I want to try out adding a graphic card to my mother’s old computer and turning it into a very basic gaming desktop. If I get a job, I am thinking of learning how to build my own gaming desktop in the future.

Currently, I think I’m having a lot of fun just starting out as a beginner!

  • Not a lurker on Lemmy, surprisingly. I did, however, almost always lurk on Reddit. If I ever needed to ask something, I’d make a throwaway.

Reason for this was anxiety. People downvoting innocent posts for reasons like “oh they want a queer character in a book? fuck em” or “they phrased something badly and I don’t want to correct them” didn’t encourage discussion to me, it made me feel like I did something wrong everytime I posted. So I stopped posting.

I didn’t feel like I could be myself on that site, either. There was a community for ADHD folk, sure, but it was split into two major subreddits, and the more popular one was a negative minefield of self-hate and gatekeeping. As for the queer community, any time a trans person is mentioned on /r/all, the drama is immense.

What was the point of posting on that site? I started using it just for tech support, eventually.

  • It’s a slow and steady process, but

Email - This night I created a ProtonMail email which I’m forwarding my professional gmail to. Not sure how it’ll respond to replying from it, though.

Phone - Disabled all the google apps except for Chrome, Gmail, Playstore, and Maps. Plan on moving from Chrome to a different browser. Looking into a alternative to Google Fit’s pedometer because I like seeing steps, lol. I have Neostore on my phone, but I still use Playstore for the games. Will check out the guide for an alternative to Maps.

    Search Engine - DuckDuckGo

Google Docs > Libreoffice on desktop.

    Youtube - Freetube and Invidious.

  • Personally, as someone who is unemployed the closest thing I have to a routine tends to happen in the morning. Everyday the first thing I do is wake up and take my medicine, then make breakfast. After that I tend to check my bank for any surprises, see if I have any emails that are important (on weekdays I check a few times a day), and backlog read Discord communities that I mod for.

After that everything I do for the day tends to depend on my energy levels, but I do try to get lunch made by 1pm, and dinner ready by 5-6pm.
