Just by checking https://lemmy.ml/communities one can see the most popular communities of lemmy.ml. The plan here is to list all the alternatives for those from other instances. One can also suggest alternatives to be added here and I update this living document.

Beehaw seems to make a fair bit of effort in providing communities for most common topics and providing content in a non-toxic and non-politically polarized environment. Would recommend alternatives in either of the two recommended instances.
if this list is still being updated, we just started up a new instance at forum.dxcomplex.com. we’ve got:
!music@forum.dxcomplex.com
!gaming@forum.dxcomplex.com
!art@forum.dxcomplex.com
!technology@forum.dxcomplex.com
!general@forum.dxcomplex.com (catch all for anything/everything else)Our community in general has a slight DIY and/or retro slant to it but you can discuss whatever within the limits of the rules
Yes, this list is being updated regularly. But really nice to hear that you have set up your own instance, I will add those right away!
thank you! i’ll check back reguarly to see what else gets added

Thanks regardless!
Anime --> !anime@jeremmy.ml
Broken link? Doesn’t work anymore. If you’ll be replacing an alternative, I suggest not substituting it with !anime@lemmy.ml as that one’s owned by an infamous subreddit hoarder on Reddit.
Some of these take an ethical step backwards. I see the pattern: lemmy.ml on the left-hand side, which is generally a good idea because lemmy.ml is centralized by disproportionate numbers. But when you have another quite large node on the RHS which is rendered strictly centralized by Cloudflare, you have a downgrade. E.g. the nodes lemmy.ca and lemmy.one should appear on the LHS, and for transparency I suggest tagging them with a lightening cloud (🌩).
Far too obviously this list has aged like milk as Lemmy has grown so huge and better tools are available for finding different communities.
I agree, but this list is pinned which made me think there’s an attempt to maintain it.
There’s also now !socialism@midwest.social and !fediverse@midwest.social
I just started !titanfall@sopuli.xyz, the one sub from reddit I feel like I could run myself. Come join if you’re a fan of the game/games! There were more that I was active in, I’m going to be trying to be even more of a contributor than I was on reddit, but I’ll ramp up as I figure out lemmy.
Dope thank you
heapoverflow.ml seems to be down.
Gotta remove it.
Don’t how up to date this is, but here are a few communities:
Is https://heapoverflow.ml gone or just momentarily down? If gone it might be good to update this great posting 😁
Linux --> /c/linux@heapoverflow.ml
Looks like it’s case sensitive

@QuentinCallaghan For libre culture I found !libre
It doesn’t really seem active tho.
